Addazio Post-Scrimmage Quotes: August 22
August 22, 2015 | Football
The Eagles completed their second preseason scrimmage in Alumni Stadium on Saturday morning. Third-year head coach Steve Addazio explained his thoughts to the media after.
On his overall thoughts of scrimmage…
“I’m actually sick to my stomach right now. We got all these penalties—I hate penalties. We’ve got guys off schedule, we got dropped balls and we missed a lot of blocks up front. There was just no consistency. Sure, we made a few big plays, but I’m just disappointed. I’m into consistency and I’m into no penalties and no turnovers. That’s how I envision things, so when it doesn’t go that way it’s upsetting to me.”
On the progress from the first scrimmage…
“I’m sure there is. The defense right now has got an awful lot of pressure, which is kind of hard on a young offense. But I don’t want that pressure to back off because I want to put pressure on the young offense so they can learn how to deal with it. But it’s probably overwhelming for them now to have that many different styles of blitzes going on, but these experiences will help us down the road.”
On how the offense is affected by defensive pressure…
“I could have made this a vanilla deal and play more base, which is what most coaches do right now. Most offensive coaches would step in right now and say, ‘I want to build confidence,’ but I didn’t do that. I just felt like I wanted to create enough chaos and disruption that the kids can learn from. But there’s a fine line between doing that and it being too much. You don’t want to demoralize your confidence but you also don’t want to give yourself false confidence.”
On the quarterback play…
“It’s just paralysis by analysis. It’s just overloading. You get to the point where you’re so overwhelmed by everything that the big things just roll you over. You’re worried about pebbles and boulders hit you. Coming out of this, I’m telling myself walking off the field, ‘We got to do this again. We’re not ready.’”
On freshman Elijah Robinson’s switch to wide receiver…
“He’s doing a great job at X. That’s a real good move for us. He’s got really good hands. He’s only been there about half a week, but I can already tell he’s going to be a good player there. So I’m happy about that.”
On the kicking game…
“If I had to play a game right now, Alex Howell would be punting and kicking field goals. But every day is a new day. I just have to go back and evaluate the film.”
