Baseball's Shaw Chosen 31st Overall in the MLB Draft

Shaw is the highest pick since Sanchez went fourth in 2009
Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- Boston College junior Chris Shaw was chosen 31st overall in the first round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft by the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. He is BC's highest pick since Tony Sanchez (2007-09) was chosen fourth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009.
Shaw played in 145 games in three years at The Heights, making 140 starts in the outfield, first base or as the designated hitter. He batted .274 lifetime as an Eagle, including a .329 average in his sophomore season. He put up a .470 slugging percentage, including a career-high .611 in his junior campaign, with 23 home runs, 32 doubles, 107 RBIs and 242 total bases. His career home run total and his 11 this past season both tied for ninth in BC record books. His 18 doubles in 2014 tied for eighth on BC's single-season list. In the past two years, he reached base in 86 of the 95 games played and tallied at least one hit in 73 of them.
The Lexington, Mass., native earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2014 and second-team accolades in 2015. He is a two-time All-New England team honoree and took home All-Northeast First Team honors after his sophomore season. He entered the 2015 season garnering preseason All-America honors by all major outlets. He was on a 15-game hit streak with seven doubles and seven home runs when he fractured a bone in his hand on April 10. He returned 18 days after having surgery to record pinch-hit singles in back-to-back games at Virginia Tech to extend his hit streak to a career-long 17 games, which ranked third in BC record books.
Shaw picked up ACC Player of the Week honors twice and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Hitter of the Week once in his career. He belted three home runs in a single game in the Eagles' 10-7 victory at Wake Forest on April 5, recording a career-high seven RBIs and 14 total bases. He has tallied four hits in a game three times in his career.
Shaw was originally drafted 800th overall out of Lexington High School by the New York Mets in the 26th round in 2012.He joins former BC catcher Matt Pare (2010-13) in the Giants organization, who signed as a free agent in 2013.
