Newcomer White Goes 21st to Ottawa
June 26, 2015 | Men's Hockey
SUNRISE, Fla. - Another local product represented Boston College in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft when incoming freshman Colin White (Hanover, Mass.) was selected 21st overall by the Ottawa Senators on Friday evening at the BB&T Center, home of the Florida Panthers.
This marks the fourth time in program history the Eagles have had two first-round selections in the same draft year as Noah Hanifin was taken fifth, overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes earlier Friday night.
The last time the Eagles had two first-round picks in the NHL Draft is when Brian Boyle (LA Kings) and Patrick Eaves (Ottawa) were selected in 2003. It also occurred in 2000 (Brooks Orpik - Pittsburgh and Krys Kolanos - Phoenix) and 1986 (Craig Janney - Boston and Brian Leetch - NY Rangers).
Boston College and Michigan were the two college programs to boast a pair two first-round picks selected in this year's draft while Boston University and Miami (OH) also had one.
Since 1970, Boston College has had 124 Eagles drafted by an NHL club and 17 first rounders total, including Hanifin and White. Under the direction of head coach Jerry York, BC has offered 14 first-round draft picks.
White, a recent member of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, netted the overtime game-winning goal over Finland in the U-18 World Championship game to give Team USA the gold medal.
In his most recent season with the USNTDP U-18 Team, the local product tallied 54 points, including 23 goals and 31 assists. In his first year in Ann Arbor, Mich., White was the assistant captain of the National Under-17 Team and notched 33 goals and 31 assists (64 points) in 47 outings, leading the team with four short-handed goals and six power play tallies.
White is Boston College's second-ever draft pick of the Senators' organization, joining Patrick Eaves as the 29th overall selection in 2003.
Boston College looks to add two more NHL prospects to its roster as incoming forward Jeremy Bracco and defenseman Casey Fitzgerald look to get selected in the following rounds on Saturday, June 27.
