Four Taken in Inaugural NWHL Draft
June 22, 2015 | Women's Hockey
BOSTON - Four rising seniors on the Boston College women's hockey team were selected in the inaugural National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) Draft, which was held Saturday at Harvard's Bright Center.
Forward Alex Carpenter, the 2015 Patty Kazmaier Award winner as the nation's best player, was chosen No. 1 overall by the New York Riveters. Forward Haley Skarupa was taken fifth overall by New York, while defenseman Lexi Bender was taken 11th overall by the Boston Pride. Forward Dana Trivigno was selected 13th overall by the Riveters.
The NWHL will launch its inaugural season later this year with four teams: New York, Boston, Connecticut Whale and Buffalo Beauts. Players drafted in in the NWHL Draft will have the option to sign with the teams that have their draft rights, or pursue free agency and sign with another team. Unlike the current women's league - the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) - the NWHL is a professional league and will have a salary budget to pay its 18-player rosters.
The full list of drafted players is available at NHL.com.
