CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College junior midfielder Sarah Mannelly is one of the five finalists for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award, which is presented annually upon the top female and male college lacrosse players in the United States.
"It is an incredible honor to be able to represent Boston College as a finalist for such a prestigious award. I am humbled to be categorized with some of the best players in the country. Our team and coaches have done an amazing job getting our program to where it is today and I am excited to share this with all of them," said Mannelly.
Mannelly is the first-ever Boston College player to be a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award. She joins Taylor Cummings (Maryland), Shannon Gilroy (Florida), Barbara Sullivan (Notre Dame), and Kayla Treanor (Syracuse) among the five finalists.
"I am so excited for Sarah and for our program. Sarah is so incredibly deserving of this honor. She worked so hard this year and her teammates did too, so to me it is team success. Not only is she one of the best athletes I've ever seen play the game but Sarah is humble and hungry. I am so happy for Sarah that she is being honored at the highest level among such great players," said head coach Acacia Walker.
The 15th annual Tewaaraton Award will be presented on Thursday, May 28 in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
The honor recognizes the stellar season the team captain is having for the Eagles. Already a member of the All-ACC First Team this year, Mannelly has been the Eagles' two-way catalyst in the midfield. She has scored a team-high 49 goals and added 17 assists for 66 points while starting all 18 games this season.
Mannelly has scored at least one goal in every game this season, including a season-high five against Syracuse in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship on April 23. She has taken a team-high 112 shots and collected 30 ground balls this season. Her 20 caused turnovers are the most on the Eagles' squad, while her 40 draw controls are second on the squad.
At the league level, Mannelly is sixth in goals per game (2.65), tied for second in game-winning goals (4), fifth in shots per game (6.35), tied for eighth in points per game (3.65). In conference play, Mannelly was tied for fifth in caused turnovers (9) and shots per game (6.29) and tied for eighth in points per game (3.43).
Boston College currently leads the ACC in goals per game (14.47), points per game (20.24), shot percentage (.494) and shots on goal per game (22.82), and average the second fewest turnovers per game (11.06).
The Eagles are in the midst of their best-ever season, going 15-3 on the year so far. In ACC play, the Eagles finished tied for second with a 5-2 record, their best-ever conference finish. Earlier this season, Boston College posted their best-ever national ranking, earning No. 2 rankings from both the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and Inside Lacrosse.
Boston College returns to the field on Sunday, May 10, when they host the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Newton Campus Lacrosse Field. The Eagles will face the winner of the first round match-up between Bryant and Loyola (Md.) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
