Newport, RI -
The Boston College women's sailing team made a valiant comeback in the final races but fell short by five points to Yale at the Sperry's Women's National Championship on Narragansett Bay in Newport on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles finished with 228 points, but Yale won the event with 223 points. Brown placed third with 234 points.
"I am so proud of the team. From day one, their efforts on and off the water were to make run at these championships. Today's nationals came down to the last race against a Yale team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation,'' said head coach Greg Wilkinson. "We came up short and it hurts but I'm proud of our effort and accomplishments this season.''
Today the divisions swapped boats again, A-division sailed in FJs and B-division sailed in Z420s. The sailors completed nine races in both divisions on windward leeward courses with 3 or 4 legs for a total of 18 races in each division for the event. The race committee was able to meet the racing deadline and completed the races just before 4:30 p.m.
Boston College led going into Thursday's competition. The top three teams -- BC, Brown and Yale -- were separated by just one point.
The Eagles led the regatta until race 14 when Yale took over the lead. The two teams were within striking distance throughout the day. Yale pushed forward when the A Division team placed in the top three in race 10 through 16. In that run, BC's B Division team (Allyson Donahue and Maddie Loosbrock) had six second place finishes including three straight -- race 10, 11 and 12, but the Eagles also had a 10th place, 17th place, 13th, 10th and a ninth place finish. BC's A Division team (Erika Reineke and Beth Barnard) placed first and fourth in the final two races to help cut the Yale lead. Yale won the event when the B Division team placed seventh and BC's team was 10th.
Sailing for Boston College was Erika Reineke with Elizabeth Barnard, Katja Sertl and Emily Schalka in the A Division, while Allyson Donahue with Emily Schalka and Madeleine Loosbrock handled the duties for the B Division.
