Hanlan, Pfalzer Named Eagles of the Year

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Olivier Hanlan, an All-ACC First Team honoree of the men's basketball team, was named male Eagle of the Year while senior Emily Pfalzer, a first team All-American for the women's hockey team, earned female Eagle of the Year honors at the Boston College All-Sports Banquet on May 1 at Conte Forum.
The Nathaniel J. Hasenfus '22 Eagle of the Year Award is considered the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College student-athlete. It is awarded annually to the male and female student-athletes who are outstanding citizens, leaders, scholars and athletes.
Hanlan, a product of Aylmer, Quebec, became the fifth Boston College men's basketball player to earn First Team All-ACC accolades this year and was an honorable mention All-America selection. He was a prolific scorer throughout his career and led the ACC in scoring (19.5) this year which ranked 22nd in the country. Hanlan also led all major conference players in scoring average during league play (21.9). In addition, he led the ACC in 3-point percentage (.436) and ranked third in 3-pointers made (2.83), fifth in free throw percentage (.810), sixth in field goal percentage (.483) and 10th in assists (4.00) during conference action. He also led the league in 30-point games (4) and 20-point games (12).
Hanlan ranks 12th all-time at Boston College in points (1,725) and ninth in 3-pointers made (176). He was just the third player in Eagle history to reach 1,000 points as a sophomore. He was the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year and an All-ACC Third Team honoree as a sophomore.
Pfalzer, a Getzville, N.Y., native, earned numerous accolades which included being named an American Hockey Coaches Association First Team All-American, Hockey East Best Defenseman and Hockey East First Team All-Star. She captained one of the best defenses in the nation that allowed just 1.21 goals per game while also contributing significantly on the offensive end. Pfalzer was the country's leading scorer among defenseman with 1.17 points per game which ranked 13th nationally. She finished the season with eight goals, 34 assists and 42 points. Her 0.94 assists per game ranked sixth nationally and she was the only defenseman ranked in the top 40 in the country in points per game.
Pfalzer is the best offensive defenseman in Boston College history as she ranks first at her position with 102 career points and 79 assists. She was the first blue-liner to reach the 100-point mark. She helped the Eagles reach their fourth Frozen Four in five years and their first-ever No. 1 ranking.
The Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Awards were also presented at the banquet. These awards are given annually to a male and female student-athlete from each class for excellence in both the classroom and on the playing field. The winners were Nick Henze (swimming & diving) and Mikaela Rix (lacrosse) from the senior class; Dan Kelly (swimming & diving) and Alex Carpenter (women's hockey) from the junior class; Kevin Kavalec (football) and Renee Bichette (fencing) from the sophomore class, and Evan Gray (track & field), Megan Keller (women's hockey), and Asiya Dair (women's tennis) from the freshman class.
Senior Alicia McKean (women's rowing) and junior Richard Moschella (track & field) were the recipients of the Learning Resources Excellence Award, while senior Erin Kickham (women's hockey) and junior Nick Colucci (baseball) won the LRSA Achievement Award.
A total of 387 BC student-athletes were recognized for earning the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement. They must have an overall grade-point average of 3.0 to garner the honor.
