York Announces Captains for 2015-16
March 30, 2015 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Teddy Doherty will serve as captain of the 2014-15 Boston College hockey team while juniors Ian McCoshen, Steve Santini and Chris Calnan will serve as assistant captains, according to an announcement made by head coach Jerry York Monday afternoon.
The Eagles' new captain corps was voted on by their peers, coaches and program personnel.
Doherty returns to The Heights following a breakout junior campaign in which he posted career highs in goals (6) and points (23). The Hopkinton, Mass., native also led the Eagles in plus/minus rating this year, posting a club-high +15 mark.
The Eagles' new captain started the season on defense and transitioned into an offensive role. Doherty notched his first two career game-winning goals (RIT -- Oct. 18 and Dartmouth -- Jan. 3) and was also named the Tournament MVP at the Dartmouth holiday tournament this season.
Upon his return, Doherty will be the Eagles' leading-career point scorer with 54 points (9-45-54) in 104 games played.
McCoshen will wear the `A' next season in his third year patrolling the blue line. Tying for second on the team with the highest plus/minus rating (+14) this year, the Faribault, Minn., native turned in some big offensive numbers from the defensive end. The 6-foot-2 defenseman scored six goals and 10 assists, including a pair of game-winning goals (Michigan -- Dec. 13 and Notre Dame -- Feb. 27).
Along with his offensive prowess this year, McCoshen still stood his ground on the other end and led Boston College by recording 64 blocked shots.
Santini suffered from an injury on Oct. 25, 2014, against Massachusetts and underwent surgery shortly after to force the Mahopac, N.Y., native to sit out 16 games. In his return on Jan. 10 against Northeastern, Santini logged an assist and finished with five points (1-4-5) on the year. Even in missing almost half the season, the 6-foot-2 finished fourth on the team in blocked shots with 30.
Calnan finished third on the team with 11 goals scored this season, scoring four of them in timely fashion. The Norwell, Mass., native registered four game-winning goals this season, second most for BC this season. On three of those occasions, Calnan found the back of the net twice when scoring a game-winning goal. The third-round Chicago Blackhawks's selection finished with 16 points on the season (11-5-16) ad posted a +2 plus/minus rating.
The last time Boston College sported four members of the captain corps was the 2004-05 season. Ryan Shannon, Andrew Alberts, Ryan Murphy and Patrick Eaves comprised the leaders of that club.
The Eagles wrapped up the 2014-15 season with their 34th NCAA Tournament appearance and 74th winning season in program history with a 21-14-3 mark. Boston College tied for second place in the Hockey East standings with a 12-7-3 mark in conference play.
