Westphal Named Second-Team All-American
March 17, 2015 | Women's Track & Field
Chestnut Hill, MA--Just days after Liv Westphal returned from the NCAA Indoor Championships, the USTFCCCA released the names of the All-American athletes for the indoor track season, naming Westphal to the Second-Team. This is not her first time receiving such an honor. In fact, Westphal was named a First-Team All American in Cross Country this past season.
The junior hailing from Limoges, France broke numerous Boston College records as well as a French National Record in the 5000 meters, the race which she excelled in beyond any other. Liv set the Boston College record in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:08.99 in mid-February at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. However, many would argue that she put together an even more impressive performance at the first indoor meet of the season, the BU Opener. Westphal set the Boston College record in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:31.62, surpassing the previous record held by Jennifer Kramer (15:47.33) in 2004.
Westphal's times proved that she was not only one of the best women's distance runners in the conference, but in the country. Liv's times made her the top qualifier in the 5000 m and the second qualifier in the 3000 m at the ACC Championships. She decided to run the 3000 meters and eventually finished in fifth place. However, those times also ranked highly on the national level as well, as she was the third overall in the 5000 m and 20th overall in the 3000 m. Westphal finished 9th in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past weekend.
Westphal's drive and talent clearly places her on the upper echelon of female distance runners in the NCAA. I would keep an eye out for Westphal's name at the end of the outdoor season. It certainly would not surprise anyone to see her name amongst the All-American's once again.
