Westphal Named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Boston College women’s cross country senior Liv Westphal has been named the 2014 ACC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Westphal is the first cross country Eagle to earn the prestigious accolade.
In order to be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
This is Westphal’s fourth straight year earning a spot on the All-ACC Women’s Cross Country Academic Team.
“Liv has been a tremendous role model to all the athletes on the team shes extremely dedicated as a student and an athlete. All her amazing accomplishments have been the direct result of extreme hard work and dedication,” said Boston College head coach Randy Thomas.
Westphal also earned her second consecutive NCAA DI individual All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA as well as ACC Women’s Cross Country Performer of the year for her outstanding 2014 campaign.
Westphal finished in first place in three races this fall, taking the top spot at the Minuteman Invitational (Sep. 13), the Battle in Beantown (Sep. 26), and the ACC Championships (Oct. 31).
Westphal's stellar cross country season was highlighted by her record-breaking 19:43 6k for first place at the ACC Championships in Earlysville, Va. on Oct. 31. After recovering from a fall at the start of the race, Westphal broke the Panorama Farms course record and tied her personal best from earlier in the season.
The senior led the Eagles to a fifth-place team finish in the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 15 with her fourth-place individual time of 20:16.
Westphal earned All-American accolades for the second year in a row after placing 30th in a field of 255 runners at the NCAA Championships with a time of 20:37.
Senior Madeleine Davidson and, a communication major, and junior Danielle Winslow, a biochemistry major, also earned spots on the 2014 All-ACC Academic Team.
Davidson tabs a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team for the second straight year while Winslow earned NCAA DI individual All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA on Feb. 11.
