Newly No. 1: Eagles Grab Weekly Honors, Set NCAA Records
December 14, 2015 | Women's Hockey
Carpenter, Skarupa share Hockey East player of the week honors for the top-ranked Eagles
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Monday was a big day for the Boston College women's hockey team. Two seniors shared the Hockey East player of the week award and the team was crowned the top-ranked team in the country.
Hockey East Players of the Week
Seniors Alex Carpenter and Haley Skarupa are this week's Hockey East players of the week after both players had stand-out performances in the team's 7-2 win at Syracuse last Thursday.
In the win over the Orange, Skarupa became the third player in program history to reach the 200-point plateau as she set a new personal-best mark with five assists in the win. She entered the game with 199 career points, and now enters the winter break with 204 career points. She ranks third in program history in career scoring, and third in career assists (110), just one back of second-place Kelli Stack '11 (111).
In the same game, Carpenter scored a career-high four goals, the best single-game effort by an Eagle since Jennifer Buckley potted four goals against Vermont on Dec. 29, 1999. In the process, Carpenter also matched, then set, a new BC career goals record. She now has 117 career goals scored and passed Erin Magee '99, who held the record with 116.
This is Skarupa's fifth career player of the week nod, and first this season. For Carpenter, it is her seventh player of the week nod this season, and the 16th of her career.
No. 1 in the Poll
In addition to the conference player honors, on Monday the Eagles also vaulted into the top spot in this week's U.S. College Hockey Online poll, moving up from the No. 2 spot where they've been most of the season.
BC enters the winter break at a perfect 20-0-0, and is just the second team in the NCAA Championship era (2000-01 to present) to reach the winter break with a perfect record, joining the 2012-13 Minnesota team that went on to earn a 41-0-0 record and the national championship.
In this week's poll, BC leapfrogged Wisconsin (18-1-1) who entered the weekend 18-0-0, but lost and tied at then-No. 9 North Dakota. The Eagles claimed 14 of 15 first-place votes.
This is the second-straight season the Eagles have earned a No. 1 ranking. In 2014-15, BC hit the top spot the first week in November, and remained there through early March in the final poll before the NCAA Tournament began. They finished the year ranked third.
NCAA record holders
Additionally on Monday, the NCAA confirmed that Boston College now holds the NCAA Division 1 record for a home unbeaten run and home winning streak.
When BC next return home on Jan. 16, the team will do so riding a now-NCAA record 38-game home winning streak, and a 44-game home unbeaten streak (43-0-1). BC's last loss at home came on Oct. 16, 2013, while its last tie was on Jan. 11, 2014.
The Eagles have snapped both records previously held by Minnesota from Feb. 18, 2012 to Nov. 16, 2013 (31 games won and unbeaten).
Six Current, Nine Total Eagles Headed to USA Camp
Late Friday, six current - and nine total - Eagles were called into the USA Hockey Winter Training Camp, which will be held Dec. 27 through Jan. 1 in Blaine, Minn.
Katie Burt, Carpenter, Kali Flanagan, Megan Keller, Skarupa and Dana Trivigno were part of the 37-woman camp roster that was announced, in addition to alumnae Emily Pfalzer '15, Stack and Allie Thunstrom '10.
The annual Women's Winter Training Camp is a training session that is used to help select the 23-player roster for the IIHF Women's World Championship. The 2016 world championship will be played March 28 through April 4 in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Carpenter, Keller, Skarupa and Trivigno were members of the gold-medal winning team at the 2015 IIHF World Championships in Sweden last year.
The No. 1 Eagles (20-0-0, 13-0-0 HEA) return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 9, when the team heads down Commonwealth Ave., to face rival Boston University at 3 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
