KEY PLAY
The Eagles tied the game at 17 on a 42-yard field by freshman Colton Lichtenberg with 2:42 to play but the Orange came back to score a game-winning, 35-yard field goal with no time left to take the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The BC defense caused a turnover late in the first quarter as Justin Simmons forced a fumble and Connor Strachan recovered at the Syracuse 33-yard line. Rouse ran four times, highlighted by a 21-yard pickup and a one-yard score to put BC up, 7-0, with just over two minutes to go in the quarter.
- On Syracuse's ensuing drive the Eagles racked up 44 penalty yards to allow the Orange to tie the game. The drive started at the SU 35 and Zach Mahoney advanced the ball with a 16-yard pass to Steve Ishmael. The quarter ended on a bad snap and a loss of seven yards but a facemask penalty moved the ball to the BC 40 in the second quarter. A personal foul after a one-yard rush moved Syracuse to the BC 24 and after an eight-yard run, pass interference put the Orange at the two-yard line. Mahoney hit Ervin Philips with a two-yard pass for the tying TD with 13:33 to play in the half.
- With just over four minutes to go in the half, Smith hurried his throw as the defense was closing in and Cordell Hudson made the interception at the SU 44-yard line and returned it 22 yards. The defense held the Orange to a field goal attempt and Cole Murphy hit a 49 yarder to give SU a 10-7 lard with 2:25 left in the half.
- Syracuse added seven more to start the third quarter on an eight-play, 66-yard drive. Philips highlighted the drive with a 31-yard run to the BC 12 and after two rushes for 11 yards, Mahoney completed a one-yard pass to Ishmael to give SU a 10-point lead.
- The Eagles fired right back as Mike Walker returned the kickoff 38 yards to the BC 38. Smith took off on the next play for a 53-yard run and Rouse punched it in on a nine-yard score to keep it a three-point game with just under 10 to play in the third quarter.
- The Eagles tied the game with just under three minutes to play on a 42-yard field goal by Lichtenberg. On fourth-and-four, Rouse rushed 11 yards as senior offensive lineman Dave Bowen cleared the way to give BC the first down and extended the drive.
- Syracuse got the win with the 35-yard field goal by Cole Murphy, hitting it as time expired. The Orange drove down the field and completed a 10-play, 51-yard drive to earn the victory.
