HIGHLIGHTS
In their final game of the 2015 season, the Boston College Eagles fought from behind to defeat Notre Dame in five sets Friday afternoon at Power Gym. With the win, the Eagles squad finished the season with a 12-20 (4-16 ACC) record, the most wins under head coach Chris Campbell in his six years at the helm of the program. Leading the charge for BC in the season finale were captains Katty Workman and Sol Calvete, who each recorded double-doubles, while Julia Topor added 13 kills to go along with her .375 hitting percentage in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
Sol Calvete registered a service ace for the final point of the opening frame as BC was victorious 25-19. After jumping out to an early 10-4 lead, the Eagles extended their lead to as much as nine at 19-10 to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
Set Two:
Notre Dame fought right back in the following set, taking it by a score of 25-14. The Fighting Irish had runs of 6-0 before finishing on a 11-4 run to head into the break with the score knotted at one-all.
Set Three:
The blue and gold fought from behind in the third set, which featured five tied scores, as they held on to a 25-23 victory and took the 2-1 advantage into the fourth set.
Set Four:
BC saw an early 5-1 lead erased after a Notre Dame called timeout sparked 7-0 run for the Irish. After BC evened the set at 14-apiece, the two squads exchanged points back and forth, part of eight tied scores in the frame, but the Eagles, led by the two straight service aces tallied by senior Franny Hock, led a 9-1 run as Boston College was able to force a decisive fifth set with a 25-18 victory in the fourth.
Set Five:
BC jumped out to early leads of 6-1 and 9-3, and despite Notre Dame's valiant effort to get back into the match, a kill from Julia Topor on match point propelled the Eagles to the win.
Coach Quotes:
"This team just works so hard all the time. They never stopped wanting to get better. They never stopped showing up to work hard in practice. They never stopped showing up with energy. I think you saw the result of that today. One thing we did have to work on was trying to make sure we stayed emotionally consistent and steady as we played. To make sure we don't have too many highs and too many lows; so that if we score a couple points in a row that we stay focused enough to continue the run. Or if we give up a point or two in a row, that it doesn't drag us down for too long. That kind of consistency is what every great team does and I thought we did a really good job on Wednesday against Louisville with that. Today, especially after that second set, to be able to bounce back and steady things out, and then to lose the third set in a close one, [the Eagles] stayed emotionally nice and steady so that they could come back and play well in the fourth and fifth. That, I think, is a testament to everybody on the team and certainly the seniors. It's something we've been working on a long time and they demonstrated that very well this afternoon." - Chris Campbell
