Women’s Hockey Signs Five for Class of 2020
November 19, 2015 | Women's Hockey
Eagles program adds first five members who have signed NLIs
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Five members of the Class of 2020 signed National Letters of Intent this week to play women's hockey at Boston College.
Head coach Katie Crowley and her staff will welcome forwards Delaney Belinskas, Caitrin Lonergan, Bridget McCarthy, Rachel Moore and defenseman Caroline Ross to The Heights next fall to join the Eagles' program.
"This year's class will be a big class and an exciting class," Crowley said. "These five players are a little bit different than what we're normally used to here. Most of these players have good size and they bring a presence and a natural strength. They're a pretty powerful and strong group. I'm excited to see them grow and develop in their four years here and see how they help take our program to the next level.
"Bridget and Caitrin have played together, and Bridget and Delaney have played together, so they all have a connection and a tie with each other. It'll be great to have all of them: they know each other, they know what each other is all about and they should be able to use that pretty early," Crowley continued.
The Class of 2020
Delaney Belinskas
Position: Forward
Height: 5-8
Shoots: Right
Hometown: Port Orange, Fla.
High School: Williston Northampton School
Club Team: Mass Spitfires U19
Belinskas plays prep hockey at Williston Northampton School under head coach Christa Talbot Syfu. In three seasons, she has recorded 75 points (33 goals, 32 assists), while gaining NEPSAC all-star honors during the 2014-15 season. She plays club hockey with Mass Spitfires. Belinskas is a three-sport athlete at Williston, also playing field hockey and softball. She is a two-time all-star in field hockey, captaining the team as a senior. On the softball field, the shortstop is a two-time captain and 2015 all-star. Belinskas is a two-time participant in USA Hockey's Developmental Camp.
Crowley on Belinskas: "Delaney is a big, strong power forward. She's a talented athlete and the captain of her field hockey and softball teams right now. I'm looking forward to see her use her strength at the next level. She's someone who teammates look at to score a goal when it's needed, and she's done it. She's a natural leader and she'll bring that to our team."
Caitrin Lonergan
Position: Forward
Height: 5-7
Shoots: Right
Hometown: Roslindale, Mass.
High School: Noble and Greenough/U.S. Under-18
Club Team: Mid Fairfield Connecticut Stars U19
Lonergan is a two-time member of the U.S. Under-18 National Team, winning goal at the 2015 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and silver at the 2014 world championships as a teammate of current Eagles Grace Bizal and Katie Burt. She plays prep hockey at New England power Noble and Greenough, where in 2015 she was the ISL most valuable player and helped Nobles win the ISL title while scoring 15 goals and adding 43 assists in 28 games. Lonergan played her freshman and sophomore years at St. Paul's (N.H.) School, where she helped lead the school to two straight NEPSAC semifinal appearances. She also plays soccer, and helped Nobles win the 2014 New England championship.
Crowley on Lonergan: "I'm excited to see Caitrin at the college level. She's played on the U.S. U18 team, and she was a leader on that team. She's going to be a player we rely on a lot and I'm excited to see her here. Caitrin is more of a play-marker and will find people, but will still score goals. She's an all-around good hockey player. She has a great personality and is a great person. You bring in kids every once in a while who you're excited to see at their next step, and then the next step. Caitrin is one of those players who we believe can really excel in the college game. While she'll be a forward for us, she can play defense, which allows her to see the game in so many ways that will help her at this level."
Bridget McCarthy
Position: Forward
Height: 5-7
Shoots: Right
Hometown: Pembroke, Mass.
High School: Noble and Greenough
Club Team: Mass Spitfires U19
McCarthy also plays prep hockey at Noble and Greenough with Lonergan, where she helped the Bulldogs post a 24-2-2 overall record in 2014-15 and finish atop the Independent School League (ISL) standings. Outside of hockey, McCarthy is also a member of Nobles' lacrosse team. In 2015, led Assabet Valley in scoring at the 2015 USA Hockey Tier I Under-19 National Championship tournament with three goals and two assists as the team advanced to the quarterfinals. She now plays with Mass Spitfires U19 this season, along with Delaney Belinskas.
Crowley on McCarthy: "Bridget is an extremely hard worker, all the time, she knows the game really well and she has a ton of speed. Those will all be great assets to our team. She'll be one of the first ones to the corner to dig out a puck, or the first one sprinting through the middle on a back check. We'll be looking at Bridget for her offense and her scoring ability, too."
Rachel Moore
Position: Forward
Height: 5-8
Shoots: Right
Hometown: Falmouth, Mass.
High School: Tabor Academy
Club Team: Bay State Breakers
Moore started her high school career at Falmouth High School, helping the Clippers reach the state finals in both her freshman and sophomore seasons for head coach - and former BC defenseman - Erin Blood. She moved to Proctor Academy to repeat sophomore year and spent two seasons in Andover, N.H, where she was a member of the NEPSAC all-star team in 2014, before collecting 54 points as a junior in 2014-15. Moore will play her senior season at Tabor Academy. She has also played club hockey with the Cape Cod Storm, NH Avalanche (who advanced to the USA Hockey Tier 1 Under-16 National Championship tournament) and most recently West Coast Selects. Moore also played field hockey at Falmouth and Proctor.
Crowley on Moore: "Rachel is coming off an injury last year, so she didn't get to play a lot of hockey. But now she's at Tabor Academy and also playing with the Bay State Breakers. She's a fast player and with that year off she had, she was able to get into the weight room and get herself very fit. It'll be great to see what she can bring at the college level. Her size and her strength are two of her biggest assets."
Caroline Ross
Position: Defense
Height: 5-7
Shoots: Right
Hometown: Rochester, N.Y.
High School: Aquinas Institute of Rochester
Last Team: North American Hockey Academy
Ross has played the last four seasons with the North American Hockey Academy under head coach Bill Driscoll. She helped NAHA win the 2014 Junior Women's Hockey League title. In 77 games as a junior, she collected 32 points (4 goals, 28 assists) while serving as one of the team's assistant captains. As a sophomore, Ross registered 39 points from 6 goals and 33 assists while playing alongside current Eagle Toni Ann Miano. She is a four-time participant at the USA Hockey Developmental Camp (2011-14) and also plays lacrosse at Aquinas Institute of Rochester.
Crowley on Ross: "Caroline is a big, strong player who will be more of a stay-at-home defenseman. But she's a player who can keep people away from our net and make the simple play. She's more a defensive defenseman like Kaliya Johnson than one who'll jump into a play like Lexi Bender. She stays at home a bit more and we expect she'll really take a liking to the way Courtney (Kennedy) coaches our defense. She's going to be a solid addition for us."
