Eagles’ senior forward wins Best Female Athlete at Globie Awards
Alex Carpenter has won awards and earned accolades throughout her career. From player of the week, monthly and yearly honors, captainships and national team call-ups and even an Olympic medal, Carpenter has already had a bountiful career at just 21 years of age.
But on Tuesday night, Carpenter added another honor at The Globies: Best Female Athlete.
The Globies were born this year to honor the best in New England sports. A Who's Who of professional and amateurs, sports figures on field and off, were nominated in 28 different categories that ranged from standard team MVPs to more unique categories like Social Media Star, Best Quote and Boston Pride.
After her record-breaking 2014-15 season in which she led the nation in scoring and won the Patty Kazmaier Award as the national player of the year – and one year removed from a silver medal in Sochi with Team USA – Carpenter was nominated for a pair of Globies: Best Female Athlete and Best College Athlete.
While another college hockey player of the year won the Globie for Best College Athlete – former BU star Jack Eichel, the 2015 Hobey Baker Award winner – Carpenter won Best Female Athlete, topping a field that included professional nominees:
"It was a great group that we had there for Best Female Athlete," Carpenter noted. "They're obviously very respected in the city of Boston, so it was pretty cool to hear my name announced as the top female athlete.
Among the group on-hand to celebrate Carpenter's recognition were the BC coaches – head coach Katie Crowley, associate head coach Courtney Kennedy and assistant coach Alison Quandt – but also her parents, Julie and Bob: "Having the coaches there was great, and having my parents there, too – it was my mom's birthday so it was a nice present for her."
When it was time for the Best Female Athlete award to be honored and Carpenter's name was called, her Globie was presented to her by Boston Bruins legend, Hockey Hall of Famer – and family friend – Ray Bourque.
"They kept congratulating me for representing the city of Boston well, but at the same time, they've done that years before I have. It was great to have people my dad know there."
Carpenter arrived at House of Blues Boston having already been recognized as the best female college hockey player in the country. Now she can tack on best female athlete in New England, as well.
"The Globies were definitely a really cool atmosphere. There were a lot of people who have done a lot for the city of Boston and New England in general. It was pretty cool to be put in that same category as them."
NOTE: Former Boston College baseball captain, and current director of operations, Pete Frates was honored at The Globies with the special Community Hero Globie for his work raising awareness and research funds – as a catalyst of the Ice Bucket Challenge – for ALS.
