Senior Destry Straight broke out with a big two-goal, one assist performance while junior blue liner Teddy Doherty offered a goal and an assist, as well. Rookie Alex Tuch added the fourth and final goal to seal the contest at Kelley Rink. Second-year goaltender Thatcher Demko won his third-consecutive start, steering away 22-of-23 Maine attempts while his counterpart, Sean Romeo, blocked 23 shots. The Eagles out-triggered Maine, 27-23. Sophomore Adam Gilmour chimed in with a pair of helpers while classmate Chris Calnan has three points in his last two outings, adding an assist tonight following a pair of tallies at UMass on Friday. “This was the best 60 minute effort I’ve seen from our team so far this season,” head coach Jerry York said. “I thought Destry (Straight) was fabulous; our best player on the ice.”
MAINE’S LAST OUTING vs. UMASS LOWELL ON JAN. 16
The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to #6 UMass Lowell on Friday night behind a pair of first period goals by Adam Chapie. Maine was called for a penalty in the first period and UMass Lowell responded with an extra attacker on the ice. Chapie tipped a Michael Fallon shot past Maine goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey) from the goal post. Chris Forney also assisted on the goal for the River Hawks. Chapie then scored his second goal of the game on the ensuring power play via an odd-man rush with Ryan McGrath. For Chapie, it was his sixth goal of the season. Michael Kapla also registered an assist on the goal. UMass Lowell outshot Maine 42-24 in the game. The River Hawks were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Maine was scoreless in three opportunities. Morris made a career-high 40 saves in goal for the Black Bears. He falls to 3-5-1 on the season. Kevin Boyle stopped all 24 shots that he faced for the River Hawks. He improves to 12-2-3 on the season.
NOTES FROM #THEBATTLEOFCOMMAVE VICTORY
- In 10 of Boston College’s last 12 trips to Boston University’s Agganis Arena, the Eagles was skated away with a victory. In all, Boston College is 11-3 in the 14 tilts at Agganis.
- Alex Tuch broke for several career bests on Friday night at Agganis Arena. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native tallied his first-career three-point performance, his first-career two-goal performance and first-career power play goal. Tuch now has four multi-point performances in his rookie season.
- Noah Hanifin scored his first-career power play goal on Friday night.
- Adam Gilmour is in the midst of a career-best six-game point streak. The Hanover, Mass., native has logged four goals and four assists during the tear. Gilmour is one game short of matching Ryan Fitzgerald’s streak of scoring at least one point in seven-straight games as that mark is tops on the team.
- Ian McCoshen notches his third-career multi-point game and first-career outing with a pair of assists. The Faribault, Minn., native assisted on both Boston College 5-on-3 penalties.
- All goal scorers in tonight’s victory over Boston University were freshmen.
- The Eagles have scored at least one power play goal in four of their last five games and have upped their overall conversion rate to 13 percent (12-of-92).
- Boston College held the nation’s leading scorer, Jack Eichel , to a -2 plus/minus rating in Friday’s win. In 20 games as a Terrier, Eichel has finished with a minus only two other times, including against Maine on Nov. 21 (-1) and Dartmouth on Nov. 30 (-2).
BEAK STREAK
After a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), Boston College has rattled off an 9-2-2 record. Boston College currently owns the longest unbeaten streak in the country, having gone unbeaten in the last eight games with six victories and a pair of draws. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at New Hampshire.
