NEWTON, Mass. - Kyle Murphy scored both Clemson goals to lead the Tigers past the Boston College men's soccer team, 2-0, on Friday night in front of 1,638 fans at the Newton Campus Field.
Murphy scored in the 36th and 70th minutes for the Tigers. Oliver Shannon and T.J. Casner recorded assists.
The Eagles established the pace early and had a couple of chances on the attack. BC started a nice passing chain in the midfield before sophomore Zeiko Lewis found a streaking Giuliano Frano in the right side of the box. He sent a cross into sophomore Isaac Normesinu, but a Clemson defender met him and the ball at the same time to thwart the attack.
BC took the first four shots of the match, forcing two saves, but Clemson scored on its first attempt. Shannon controlled the ball on the right side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box. Murphy was waiting at the six-yard box with a defender on him. He fought for the ball and found the back of the net to give Clemson the lead.
Boston College had a great opportunity early in the second half to notch the equalizer. Junior Derrick Boateng handled the ball on the left side and fed Lewis towards the middle. He dribbled the ball through traffic and found Normesinu to his right. He fired but grazed the right side netting.
Clemson added to the lead in the 70th minute after a BC turnover in Clemson's offensive half. Casner recovered the loose ball on the right sideline and took it into the corner. He crossed it into the box to an awaiting Murphy who found the back of the net again to make it 2-0.
BC managed to get a couple of more shots off but none were on target.
Junior Alex Kapp made one save in goal for BC while Andrew Tarbell made two for Clemson (2-3-0, 1-0-0 ACC).
BC (3-1-1, 0-1-0 ACC) is back in action on Tuesday night when it travels to nearby Harvard.
