Softball Heads to Arizona for Diamond Devil Invitational

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College softball teams heads to Tempe, Arizona for the Diamond Devil Invitational hosted by Arizona State from Friday, Feb. 21 to Sunday, Feb. 23. The Eagles (2-3) won two games in their first tournament of the season, the Ragin Cajun’s Invitational in Lafayette, Louisiana. BC defeated Central Arkansas and Valparaiso, and lost to No. 4 Michigan and Memphis twice.
Captain Nicole D’Argento (2-2) pitched like and ace for the Eagles, allowing just three earned runs in 31.1 innings pitched over four games, striking out 33 batters in the span. She pitched three complete games, including a shutout, and pitched 10.1 innings of three-hit ball in relief in the one game she did not start. She captured all-tournament honors for her performance. The fifth-year pitcher also produced at the place, batting .273 in five games while driving in four runs on three hits.
In the Eagles last game, they fall to #4 Michigan 6-5. BC held a 4-0 lead heading into the sixth inning, but allowed the Wolverines to score twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. Boston College made a valiant effort to mount a comeback, scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was unable to plate the tying run on third before making the final out.
SCOUTING REPORT
Idaho State (Friday, Feb. 21 – 1 p.m.)
The Bengals have jumped out to a 5-1 start to the 2014 softball season, and won their first five games before final falling to Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 9. ISU has scored 46 runs in its first five games, and boasts a team batting average of .346.
Drake University (Friday, Feb. 21 – 6 p.m. / Saturday, Feb. 22 – 2:15 p.m.)
The Bulldogs have started the season 0-10 and have failed to score in seven of their first 10 games. Rebekah Schmidt leads the way for Drake from the circle with an ERA of 4.73 in 45.2 innings pitched. Liz Buck leads the team with a .429 batting average.
#4 Arizona State (Saturday, Feb, 22 - 6:45 p.m.)
The Sun Devils are a perfect 12-0 to start the 2014 season. ASU has a team batting average of .372 and has scored 89 runs to their opponents’ 14 in their first 12 games. The Sun Devils have a team batting average of 0.84, led by Dallas Escobedo (0.55) and Mackenzie Popescue (0.59).
Seton Hall (Sunday, Feb. 23 – 11:00 a.m.)
The Pirates are 3-4 on the year and are led by Meredith Henze (.556 batting average, eight RBI) and Danielle Destaso (.286 batting average, seven RBI). Casey Moses has been their top pitcher, posting and ERA of 2.50 through 14 innings pitched.
