Boston, Mass. – The Boston College women’s track and field had a strong showing in its opening meet of the season at the Boston University Season Opener on Saturday. The Eagles took first place in four events, while senior Liv Westphal shattered records in the 5k.
Westphal set a new school record with her first-place 15:31.62 finish in the 5k. The previous record was 16:02.99, held by Julie Spolidoro since 2003. Westphal’s time is over a minute faster than her previous best (16:32.41 on Feb. 14, 2014 at Iowa State). Her time is the eighth fastest time in NCAA DI collegiate history.
Westphal’s 15:31.62 5k finish was faster than all of last year’s NCAA DI Championship qualifying times. Last season’s championship qualifiers for the 5k had times ranging from 15:40.55 to 16:03.12.

Junior captain Carly Daniel finished second in the 400m, clocking a time of 57.06.
The Eagles continued their winning ways in the 500m, with Boston College women taking the top three spots. Sophomore Robin Gross placed first at 1:15.20, followed closely by freshman Molly McCabe at 1:15.23 and Camila Isern (1:16.56). Gross’s and McCabe’s times qualified them for the ECAC Championships and will be on the top-ten all-time at BC.
In the 800m, freshman Julia Gregory finished just out of first place at 2:18.1 for second. Freshman Shannon Ahern placed third at 2:18.8.
The Eagles had another first-place finisher in sophomore Claudia DiSomma, who sprinted the last lap of the 1000m race in 30 seconds to finish with a time of 2:55.60.
Boston College was represented highly in the 3k as freshman Laura Leff (10:05), Predmore (10:21), and Roecker (10:22) placed third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
BC’s top 4x400m (Daniel, DiSomma, McCabe, Gross) placed second with an ECAC qualifying time of 3:52.18.
