Volleyball Sweeps Clemson On Senior Day

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles (5-7 ACC, 10-13) and the Clemson Tigers (5-8 ACC, 17-10) competed for the first time this season in a Sunday afternoon showdown at the Heights. BC dominated on their senior day, sweeping the visiting Tigers.
Three seniors were honored in their third to last home game of the season before the match. Kellie Barnum, a three-year captain and starting setter for the Eagles was accompanied by her parents Donnalisa and Bill, as well as her brothers Michael and Christopher. Courtney Castle, a 2014 captain and libero has played in 103 matches wearing the maroon and gold. Castle was escorted by her parents Karrie and Ralph as well as her boyfriend Louie Addazio, her brother Kyle, and his girlfriend Brittnei Miller. The third senior, Lauren Fields is a defensive specialist who has played in 110 matches as an Eagle. Fields was escorted by her parents Tina and Les.
In the three set victory over Clemson, junior outside hitter Katty Workman recorded 12 kills and 10 digs, good for her 38th career double-double and the all-time program record. Julia Topor also recorded a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 11 kills and 10 digs. Seniors Fields and Castle held down the back row with six and 18 digs, respectively.
BC had another strong blocking match as they tallied 12.0 total team blocks, led by McLain’s four block assists and one solo block. Kam McLain also hit very efficiently, at .412 %. As a team, the Eagles hit .274 %, while holding Clemson to a .104 % hitting efficiency.
In set one the Eagles held control the entire set, putting up 5.0 total blocks in the 25-18 win. Topor led the Eagles with six kills while Workman recorded five in the first set. Workman and Castle both had five digs in the preliminary set. Barnum had 14 assists in set one and BC outhit the Tigers .225 % to .023 %.
BC held the reins at the start of set two, forcing Clemson to call a timeout as BC boasted an early 10-6 lead. The Tigers rallied back within two to 15-13, resulting in a timeout call from Chris Campbell. After the timeout, BC pulled out to a 19-15 lead heading down the stretch.
Clemson rallied back within one, but the Eagles stretched their lead and took set two, 25-20. Workman and Topor recorded four more kills apiece in set two, while Kam McLain had three. Castle led the Eagles with five digs.
A fired up Tiger team came storming out in set three, determined to hold off an Eagle sweep. However, BC continued to dominate the match and pulled out to an 11-7 lead. Clemson took an early timeout in an attempt to regroup. Coach Hoover’s (CU) efforts succeeded as the Tigers pulled within two.
At a 15-13 BC lead, coach Chris Campbell called a timeout. A battle ensued as the Tigers fought and tied the set up at 18. The Eagles extended their lead to 21-19, showing no signs of letting up. In a fury of senior day energy and momentum, BC took set three 25-20, putting the finishing touches on the senior day sweep.
The Eagles’ win over Clemson is their first victory since 2006 over the Tigers. BC now has five ACC wins, the most under Coach Campbell’s control. The maroon and gold will begin a four-match road trip next Friday when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to face Georgia Tech.
