Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
Junior Erika Reineke won her third consecutive ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Sailing Championship this past weekend in Washington. The event was hosted by Western Washington University & Bellingham Bay Yacht Club.
Reineke is just the fourth person in college sailing to claim three singlehanded national championships, and the first to do so in each of their first three seasons of competition.
The other three-time winners include: Anna Tunnicliffe (Old Dominion '05 and gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics), Andrew Campbell (Georgetown '06 and gold medalist at the 2007 Pan Am Games) and Boston College's Annie Haegen '12, who was the 2012 Eagle of the Year. Tunnicliffe, Campbell and Haegen all won their third national championships as seniors, while Reineke has done so as only a junior.
Reineke, a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, compiled 10 points to finish in first place. She placed second in the first race, first in the second and placed third in the third race. Reineke finished second in the final two races to win the event. Brown's Lindsey Baab was second with 17 points, while Coast Guard's Dana Rohde was third with 19 points.
Reineke, an Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) All-American last year, was also a finalist for Women's Sailor of the Year in June of 2014.
