In the preliminary set, Virginia Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Eagles put a point on the board. BC trailed for the majority of set one, but went on a six-point run to bring the score from 17-10 to 17-16. BC did not squander their comeback as they pushed through a 21-21 tie and took set one, 25-22. McLain had six kills in set one and Topor and Castle each recorded a service ace.
In set two, the score remained tight throughout until the Hokies capitalized on a BC attack error at 18-18. Virginia Tech took control of the set from that point and took set two, 25-20. McLain remained hot in set three, recording three kills. Topor and Workman also tallied three kills apiece in the second set.
Similar to the second set, set three remained close for almost its entirety until the Hokies took advantage of a BC attack error a scored four points in a row to bring the score from 15-15 to 19-15. The Eagles attempted to battle back but did not succeed and dropped set three, 25-19.
The Eagles came in to set four playing with a do-or-die mentality, knowing full well that a loss would mean not only the end of the match, but the end of the 2014 season. Both teams exchanged points throughout the set, but the Eagles held onto a three point barrier through the middle of set four. BC reached 20 first, but the Hokies were not far behind at 19. Virginia Tech then went on a four point run putting them up 23-20. BC rallied back, but were out of time, as the Hokies took set four, 25-23, ending the match.
The four-set loss to the Hokies concludes the Eagles’ 2014 campaign. BC put up their best ACC record under coach campbell at 6-12 and return 11 of their 14 players for next season.
