Volleyball Defeats Syracuse, Sweeps Season Series

The Eagles (11-14, 6-8 ACC) completed a season sweep of the Syracuse Orange (8-18, 1-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y. BC’s season sweep of an ACC team marks the first 2-0 season record since the Eagles were victorious twice over NC State in 2009.
In the four-set defeat of Syracuse, outside hitter Katty Workman led the Eagles with a season-high 23 kills (.315%). Workman also recorded 15 digs, second only to libero Courtney Castle’s 22. Workman’s performance at Syracuse produced a total of 25.5 total points, earning more than an entire set single-handedly.
Senior Kellie Barnum quarterbacked the offense with assistance from junior Mallori Moffat. Barnum had 25 assits and Moffat tallied 17. The hitters responsible for putting away these sets were Julia Topor, 10 kills; Sol Calvete, 9 kills; Kam McLain, 8 kills and Anna Sold, 2 kills.
As a team, the Eagles had 10 service aces, 53 kills, 65 digs and 8.0 total blocks.
BC and Syracuse stayed tight through the first set, exchanging points evenly. The Eagles reached 20 first and proceeded to take set one, 25-21. Workman and Calvete both recorded four kills in the first frame. The Eagles just edged the Orange in several categories, including hitting percentage (.211% BC; .175% SU) and service aces (2 BC; 1 SU).
The Orange and the Eagles battled it out through the beginning of the the second set, but Syracuse pulled out to a 19-13 lead. The Eagles clawed their way back, and brought the score to 20-18 forcing a ‘Cuse timeout. The Orange, however, did not waste their momentum and took the second set, 25-23. Through two sets, Workman had 11 kills and Castle had 13 digs.
Following suit of the previous two sets, the two Northeast universities stayed neck-and-neck in the beginning of the set. The Eagles pulled ahead to 18-15 and continued to drive towards the 25 point mark. BC finished their push in set three and won, 25-22. After three sets Workman had a double-double, the 40th in her career, Barnum and Moffat had 19 and 13 assists respectively and Castle had 19 digs.
The Eagles, determined to avoid a five set match, came out tough in set four. BC went on several runs and held a solid lead for the entirety of set four. The Eagles were victorious in set four and finished the match with a decisive 25-15 win over the Orange to seal the match.
The Eagles now hold the best ACC record with six wins, since 2007 (eight wins). With four matches left to play in the conference, BC has a good chance to reach and possibly surpass eight wins. Next weekend the Eagles will travel to sunny Florida to face No. 2 Florida State on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
