No. 8 Field Hockey Falls to Northeastern in OT
October 05, 2014 | Field Hockey
Boston, Mass. - No. 8 Boston College field hockey fell to Northeastern University, 3-2, in its sixth overtime game of the season. The Huskies took BC into double overtime at Dedham Field and scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes remaining. The 8-4 Eagles are now 3-3 in overtime games this season.
In the first frame, Boston College dominated the possession battle in Northeastern's half, but couldn't capitalize on its four first-half shots. The Huskies tallied three shots on Eagle goalkeeper Leah Settipane, who made an outstanding save on a breakaway with six minutes remaining in the half to keep the score even at zero. Neither team yielded a goal in the first half and headed into halftime with a 0-0 tie.
"The team played a good game in terms of possessing the ball. The will to win the game was strong throughout the 90 minutes of play. We need to take some more risks in our attacking 25 to provide some more dangerous scoring opportunities. This is an area that the team recognizes it needs to be better in order to win these types of close games," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
Five minutes into the second half, junior forward AshLeigh Sebia maneuvered the ball downfield into the circle and junior forward Kelcie Hromisin tipped it in for her fourth goal of the season to put the Eagles up, 1-0.
The Huskies answered less than two minutes later on a goal by Kelly Dunn to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Senior midfielder Emma Plasteras put Boston College ahead on the Eagles' first attack penalty corner play of the game with 14 minutes left. Junior midfielder Romee Stiekema notched her third assist of the season on the go-ahead goal.
Northeastern subbed in a kickback with five minutes remaining to give the Husky offense an additional burst. NU scored on a corner play with less than three minutes left to even the score at two and send the game into overtime.
Boston College led the shot count 3-2 in the first overtime, but neither team allowed a goal, forcing a second overtime.
With six minutes remaining in the second overtime, Husky forward Emma Lamison netted the game-winning goal to move Northeastern to a ten-game win streak.
"I am confident the team will utilize the results of this weekend to apply themselves this week as we prepare for another challenging weekend. The work rate, focus, and determination of this team has not changed from the day we stepped on campus. I know the players will go back to that foundation, rely on what we are good at, and work incredibly hard this week to prepare for two great games this weekend," said Lamb.
The Eagles are back in action Friday, Oct. 10 for an ACC matchup against Duke in Durham, N.C.
