No. 9 UNC Takes Down Volleyball

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Eagles (8-11, 3-5 ACC) dropped a three set match to No. 9 North Carolina (16-2, 7-1 ACC) on Friday evening in Carmichael Arena on the campus of UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C. BC struggled in the first two sets, losing 25-12 and 25-13. The maroon and gold made a push in set three, but it was too little too late, as the Tar Heels finished off their sweep with a 25-21 victory.
The Eagles were led by outside hitter Katty Workman who totalled eight kills and six digs. Freshman Sol Calvete was the only Eagle hitter to produce a positive hitting percentage (.235). Senior setter Kellie Barnum had 15 assists. As a team, BC recorded four service aces, all which came in the third set, and five total team blocks.
In set one, against the strong UNC defense, BC hit -.240, gathering just five kills. On the flip side, the Tar Heels hit .304 with 11 kills. The Eagles dropped set one to the host team, 25-12.
The Eagles earned four straight kills at the beginning of set two, determined to keep the score tighter in their second go around. However, the Eagles hit in the red again (-.129), while their opponents excelled at a .261 hitting percentage. Workman recorded half of her eight kills in set two, Calvete added two kills and three digs in the 25-13 loss.
BC was strong in set three, holding the lead for a period and breaking twenty for the first time in the evening. A .132% hitting percentage, along with four service aces and three total team blocks were not enough for the Eagles to take down a strong Tar Heel team in their home arena.
BC will travel to North Carolina State for a 2:00 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon.
