Doherty Takes Defensive Player of the Week Honors
October 20, 2014 | Men's Hockey
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Junior defenseman Teddy Doherty earned Boston College's first Hockey East award of the season after landing Defensive Player of the Week honors for a career performance in the Eagles' first win of the season at RIT on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The 5-foot-9 blue liner not only recorded his second-career three-point performance with a goal and two assists, he also notched his first-career game-winning goal after lighting the lamp at 2:59 of the second period at Blue Cross Arena.
The last time Doherty attained three points was his freshman season after a three-assist performance on Oct. 28, 2012, against UMass Lowell.
The Hopkinton, Mass., native was a team-high +4 on the evening, falling just short of his career-best +5 set against Alabama-Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012.
Monday's laurels stands as Doherty's first-career conference award.
Doherty joins Hockey East Player of the Week Steven Iacobellis (UMass) and Hockey East Rookie of the Week Andrew Poturalski (UNH) as the league's top honorees.
Since the 2007-08 season, Boston College has made up for its liabilities after following an opening season loss. The Eagles are now 5-for-5 in their following outing after dropping the season opener.
Doherty was one of four defensemen to score in the Eagles' 6-2 triumph over RIT, joining junior captain Michael Matheson and sophomores Steve Santini and Ian McCoshen.
Boston College welcomes Colorado College on Friday, Oct. 24, for the Eagles' home opener at 7:30 p.m. The following night, BC will resume conference play against Massachusetts on Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. puck drop
