Volleyball dropped their second three set match of the weekend to the University of Miami on Sunday afternoon at the Heights. The Hurricanes (4-2 ACC, 11-6) defeated the Eagles (2-3 ACC, 7-9) for the 20th time in the two teams’ history.
Boston College was led by junior Katty Workman, who recorded 13 kills and 9 digs. Opposite Julia Topor registered 7 kills and a .217 hitting percentage. Senior setter Kellie Barnum handed out 28 assists while adding 2 kills and 5 digs. Courtney Castle, a senior hitter recorded 4 kills, 7 digs and 3 service aces. Senior libero Lauren Fields started her second ACC game in the opposite jersey, digging 15 balls.
Miami prevailed in set one, 25-21, led by senior outside hitter Savanah Leaf who tallied nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage in set one. BC was led by Topor and Workman who both grabbed three kills in set one. Sarah Mendes put away a huge kill in the middle at 18-15, shifting the momentum. The Eagles stayed close to the Canes through set one, but big offensive plays from Miami in the twenties earned the Canes set one.
The Eagles were sharp in set two. The set began with two Castle service aces along with kills from Workman and Topor. Both teams accumulated 11 kills in the set, with the difference coming in efficiency. Miami hit .167 percent, while the Eagles hit just .020 percent. Barnum used herself as an offensive weapon twice in set two, while Topor and Workman once again both notched three kills apiece. Junior Kam McLain had a crucial solo block putting the Eagles up 18-15. The Eagle and Canes battled it out down the stretch, but Miami capitalized on opportunities at the end and finished off set two 25-23.
The Canes came out in set three prepared to block the Eagles’ offensive threats. Four of their first seven points came from blocks. Workman finally got one down, bringing the score to 7-3 Miami. The Eagles regrouped and pulled the score close again, forcing Miami to call a timeout after earning three points in a row. Through the middle of the third set, Miami’s Leaf had five kills, leading the Canes. Workman recorded seven of her 13 kills in set three, keeping the Eagles within striking distance. The Eagles were down 22-16, but a three-point surge brought the score to 22-19, forcing the Canes to call timeout. Out of the timeout the Canes went on a 4-1 run to close out the set, 25-21.
BC struggled offensively, hitting just .101 percent for the match while Miami recorded a .262 hitting percentage. Miami’s defensive efforts at the net notched 11 total team blocks, which stymied the Eagles’ offensive weapons like Workman, Topor and Skold. Castle was a bright spot as she gathered an impressive three service aces, continuing her dominance from the service line.
The Eagles return to action on Friday when they welcome Wake Forest to Power Gym for an 8:00 p.m. matchup over Homecoming Weekend. Boston College will complete their four-match homestand on Friday before heading to Notre Dame next Sunday.
