CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Boston College softball team tallied its first ACC victory of the season en route to a doubleheader split against the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday night.
BC improved to 1-4 in the ACC and 9-16 overall after its 3-2 nine inning win in game two of the doubleheader. The Eagles fell by that same 3-2 score in game one earlier Friday night.
In game one, a three run Cavaliers first led by Marcy Bowdren’s two-run single gave Virginia all the runs they would need en route to a 3-2 victory. Freshman Stephanie Lord pitched well – allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings to drop to 0-2 this season. Melanie Mitchell went the distance for the Cavaliers – allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out 10 to improve to 10-9.
Chelsea Dimon’s second homer of the season and Maria Pandolfo’s sac fly in the fifth cut the Virginia lead to 3-2 but that’s as close as BC would come as they went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
In game two, solo runs in the first inning by both teams held up until the ninth when the Eagles plated two while extinguishing a Cavaliers rally to secure the victory.
Dimon fired a complete game for the Eagles – allowing just two earned runs on nine hits over nine innings to improve to 7-6. Aimee Chapdelaine also went the distance – allowing one earned run on eight hits to fall to 3-6.
CJ Chirichigno’s RBI groundout in the first gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead but it didn’t last long as Karli Johnson’s RBI sac fly knotted the game after one. The team’s exchanged zeros on the scoreboard until the ninth inning when Annie Sommers scored on a passed ball during a Chirichigno strikeout and a Tory Speer RBI single to put BC up 3-1. The Cavaliers rallied with a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth as Taylor Williams led off the inning with a triple and eventually scored on Bowdren’s groundout. After a two out walk, Dimon got Karli Johnson to ground out to third to end the game.
The Eagles and Cavaliers will play the rubber game of their series tomorrow at noon.
