Women's Basketball Tops Providence, 80-71

Kristen Doherty had 23 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead Boston College to an, 80-71, non-conference victory over Providence at Alumni Hall in a non-conference Sunday afternoon. Boston College improved to 8-5 on the season, while Providence dropped to 5-6.
Doherty shot 8-for-15 from the floor and went 5-for-6 from the foul line for her season-high of 23 points. Katie Zenevitch had a strong game inside with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Nicole Boudreau shot 5-for-10 from the floor, 4-for-7 from the three-point arc for 15 points. She also had five assists and six rebounds. Junior Kat Cooper added 14 points on 6-of-10 from the floor.
Boston College opened the game going 7-for-7 from the field in the first five minutes of play to take an 18-3 lead. Zenevitch opened the game with a mid-range jumper, followed by a three-pointer from Kat Cooper. Doherty would convert a traditional three-pointer play followed by a baseline drive and BC was up, 10-3 lead.
Boudreau then put together her own eight-point run behind two consecutive three's followed by a baseline drive and the Eagles held an 18-3 lead at 15:32 in the game
Providence slowly chipped away at the lead. The Lady Friars hit four straight three-pointers and the Eagles lead was down to three points with 8:34 to play. With 1:38 to play the home team took its first lead in the game, 35-33. The Eagles took the lead into the locker room when Doherty hit a three-pointer with two seconds on the clock, 40-37.
BC shot 45 percent from the floor and held a 17-14 lead on the boards. Providence shot 50 percent and 6-for-10 from long range.
The Eagles pulled away from Providence halfway through the second half. BC ran off an 13-1 run behind two three's from Boudreau and one from Cooper to increase the lead from a six point lead to a 65-50 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
Doherty helped seal the victory scoring six of the Eagles last 10 points.
BC shot a season-high 60 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game. The Eagles also won the battle of the boards, 31-28. Boston College had 18 assists and nine steals in the game.
Game Notes: Kristen Doherty had two steals, which gives her 183 career thefts and moves her into fourth on the all-time list ... BC went 16-for-18 from the foul line ... Lauren Engeln and Kate Zenevtich were perfect from the charity stripe going 4-for-4 ... BC had 18 assists ... Boston College will next host Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets at the door.
