BOSTON COLLEGE VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY
One of the fiercest rivalries in college hockey resumes Friday night when the Eagles invade Agganis Arena, marking the 263rd meeting between the two Boston institutions. Friday’s contest will be absent of Jack Parker, a BU mainstay since 1973. This marks the first time BC skated against BU in which Parker was not behind the bench since Feb. 21, 1973. Parker faced the Eagles 155 times, including 82 meetings with Coach York. The Terriers lead the overall series, 129-116-17, but BC has enjoyed its recent trips to BU. BC has won five of the last six meetings on Comm. Ave. The Eagles will be seeking revenge against BU from the last encounter. The Terriers knocked BC out of the Hockey East Tournament in the semifinals on March 22 thanks to a three-power play goal effort. Both Danny O’Regan and Evan Rodrigues scored two goals apiece. All in all, Coach York is just one game below .500 against his cross-town rival, amassing an overall record of 37-38-7 when facing BU.
TERRIER TALK
Boston University skates into Friday’s contest ranked 17th under first-year head coach David Quinn. The former Colorado Avalanche associate head coach won his first three-of-four games as Terriers’ coach, but has since dropped the last three-of-four. Boston University is 4-4-0, overall, and has yet to win a game on the road (0-3-0). BU is 4-1 at home with its sole loss coming against Rensselaer on Oct. 18 (3-1). Sophomore defenseman Ahti Oksanan leads the Terriers’ scoring column with two goals and seven assists in eight outings. Oksanan is tied for 53rd in the country in overall scoring (1.12 ppg) and fifth, overall, amongst all defensemen. Oddly, BU’s second highest-scoring skater is also a defenseman. Garrett Noonan has logged eight points (2-6-8) and is tied for sixth in the country amidst all blue line scoring. BU’s overall offense roams in the middle of the pack, ranked 34th with 2.62 gpg. The defense, however, is tied for 16th and is allowing 2.50 gpg.
IF THE SHOE FITZ…
Freshman forward Ryan Fitzgerald reaped BC’s first Hockey East award this season after picking up the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week honor thanks to a pair goals against Northeastern last weekend. The North Reading, Mass., product strung together his first goal-scoring streak as an Eagle, potting his first-career game-winning goal in the 4-2 triumph over NU on Nov. 1. The following night, the 5-9 forward was all over the ice and eventually scored his third goal of the season. On the national level, Fitzgerald is tied for 28th amongst all rookie skaters averaging 0.71 points per game. In comparison with the rest of Hockey East, he is tied for seventh.
(PENALTY) KILLING THEM SOFTLY
Senior captain Patrick Brown scored his second short-handed goal of the season in the 4-2 win at Northeastern on Nov. 2. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native has accounted for two of three BC short-handed tallies this year, marking the first Eagle to score two short-handed goals in a season since Bill Arnold recorded three as a freshman in 2010-11. Brown’s man-down marker occurred consecutively after Johnny Gaudreau’s first-career short-handed goal on Nov. 1. Interestingly for Brown, the score at Northeastern marked his first-ever goal on the road.
THRILL-MOUR
Rookie forward Adam Gilmour scored his first-career goal in memorable fashion, netting the walk-off tally in overtime at Northeastern on Nov. 2. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal helped lift the Eagles to their first road victory of the season.
ONE AWAY…
Johnny Gaudreau scored his 100th-career points against Wisconsin on Oct. 18, but his linemate is about to join that pantheon in the near future. Senior Bill Arnold is one point away from reaching the 100-point plateau for his career. The Needham, Mass., native has logged 45 goals and 54 assists (45-54-99) in 126 games as an Eagle. Arnold would become the 75th player in BC lore to score 100 points for their career.
QUINN-ING
Junior Quinn Smith posted his first two-assist game of the season and third of his career in the 4-3 overtime win at Northeastern on Nov. 2. It was the first time Smith’s turned in two assists since March 8, 2013, against Vermont. Through seven games, the Fairfield, Conn., native is fourth in scoring for the Eagles (1-5-6).
NEXT…ON SPORTSCENTER
In Boston College’s thrilling 3-3 tie at Minnesota on Oct. 25, freshman defenseman Ian McCoshen made the play of the day…literally. In front of his hometown crowd, the Faribault, Minn., native caught a deflected shot out of thin air just inches from the goal line and flung it to safety with 1:20 remaining in overtime to help maintain a point for the Eagles. McCoshen’s play was featured as the No. 1 play of the day on SportsCenter’s known commodity of its Top 10 Plays of the Day. Later on, the play was highlighted as the top play in college hockey on the NCAA’s “Top Five Plays of the Week”.
GEAU AHEAD
Through seven games, Johnny Gaudreau is tied for 10th in the country and fourth in Hockey East in points per game (1.52 ppg). Following a three-goal weekend against Northeastern on Nov. 1-2, the Carneys Point, N.J., native has scored six goals and five assists thus far. He has scored at least one point in all but one game, including a pair of three-point outings against RPI and Wisconsin.
DON’T BE OFFENSE-DED
Boston College is now averaging 4.14 goals per game, standing as the fifth-ranked offense in the country and third in the conference.
