Volleyball Continues Road Swing at Pittsburgh, Maryland

The Boston College volleyball team begins the later portion of a four-match road swing this weekend as the Eagles take on ACC foes Pittsburgh and Maryland.
The Eagles (8-10, 0-6 ACC) and head coach Chris Campbell will be making a trip to the Steele City to face the Panthers (11-8, 3-3 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. before heading to College Park, Md., to square off against the Terrapins (10-8, 2-4 ACC) on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.

Boston College vs. Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is one of the Eagles most contended rivalries, squaring off against each other a total of 22 times. As former members of the Big East, the series between Pittsburgh and BC began in 1983 with the Panthers holding a 21-1 all-time mark over the Eagles.
In the last meeting in 2004 BC fell in four sets, 3-1. The Eagles only victory in the series came in 2000 when they defeated the Panthers in a hard fought five set battle in Chestnut Hill.
Boston College vs. Maryland
The series between BC and Maryland began in 2002 with the Eagles 6-11 all-time against the Terps entering the weekend.
In the first meeting between the two teams last season, Boston College took a four set, 3-1 victory over Maryland in their first match in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational in College Park, Md. on Sept. 7. Outside hitter Courtney Castle recorded her fifth double-double of the 2012 season in that match with 17 kills and 20 digs while teammate Katty Workman tallied a double-double as well with 12 kills and 11 digs.
The Terps took the second meeting in four sets, 3-1 in Power Gym on Nov. 24. Workman and Castle both charted double-doubles in the match. Setter Kellie Barnum registered 48 assists while Kameron Mclain notched a career-high 11 kills and teammate Franny Hock posted 14 digs.
Team Leaders
Outside hitter Katty Workman leads the team in kills and ranks fourth in the ACC with 258. Workman has charted seven double-doubles throughout the 2013 season with her most recent against Virginia where she posted 26 kills and 21 digs. The California native additionally ranks second on the team in digs with 200, averaging 2.99 digs per set.
Senior middle blocker Melissa McTighe ranks second on the team in kills with 137. McTighe has an average hitting percentage of .269 and leads the Eagles in blocks with 61.
At the setter position, team captain Kellie Barnum leads the squad in assists with 586 and ranks ninth in the ACC averaging 8.62 assists per set.
Defensively, freshman Madisen Lydon paces the team in digs with 250, averaging 3.91 digs per set.
Scouting the Panthers
Pittsburgh is 11-8 and 3-3 in the ACC. The Panthers are 4-3 at home. Last weekend, they dropped two matches on the road in a straight-set loss against Miami and another straight-set loss against No. 21 Florida State.
The Panthers are ranked first in the ACC in service aces with 122. They rank fifth in the conference in hitting percentage with .240 and eighth in the conference in both assists (875) and kills (922).
Scouting the Terrapins
The Terps embark on the weekend with an overall record of 10-8 and a mark of 2-4 in the ACC. Maryland is tough at home with an 8-2 record. The Terrapins fell in both matches on the road last weekend falling in straight-sets to #21 Florida State and Miami.
Maryland is ranked second in the ACC in blocks averaging 2.70 blocks per set. They rank 10th in the conference in both assists (784) and kills (852).
A Look Ahead
The Eagles return to Power Gym next weekend as they host Clemson on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in their Dig Pink match and Georgia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon.
