Softball Opens Embassy Suites Classic Against Bethune-Cookman on Friday

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College softball team concludes its spring tournament season with the FAU Embassy Suites Classic beginning on Friday, March 9 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Eagles (12-5) begin the gauntlet against Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 4 p.m. Links to all the games can be found here.
Boston College is coming off a series split with Stetson. Freshman Chelsea Dimon drove in the winning runs with her first career homer and senior Morgan Kidd delivered 4.1 quality innings as the Eagles took a 2-1 win over the Hatters on Wednesday, March 7, a day removed from falling, 7-1.
The Eagles have scored 76 runs and given up 54 in 17 games. The pitching staff has held opponents to a .210 average, while BC is hitting .310. Junior Nicole D’Argento paces the unit with 14 appearances, racking up 41 strikeouts and 2.03 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched. The Ashland, Mass. native also boasts a .400 batting average, with a team-leading three home runs and 15 RBI.
Senior Ali Lynette-Krech leads the squad with a .479 batting average and a .528 on-base percentage. Classmate Brittany Wilkins charges the lineup with 15 runs batted in and eight extra base hits, including three long balls.
SCOUTING REPORTS
Bethune-Cookman (Friday, March 9 – 4 p.m.)
The Wildcats held off Delaware State, 6-5, on Tuesday, March 6 to improve to 5-16 on the year. S. Tolbert has 14 complete games in 20 appearances through the first 21 games. She is 5-12 with a 6.17 earned run average. The Wildcats allow nearly eight earned runs per game, while scoring just under 4.5. Banuelos-Smith lead B-CU with a .373 batting average, .644 slugging percentage and four home runs.
FAU (Friday, March 9 – 8 p.m.)
The Owls fell in both games of a double-header, 11-0, 5-1, with Western Kentucky on Wed., March 7 and are 6-15 entering this weekend. The pitching staff carries an ERA of 4.08, having allowed 83 earned runs in 144.1 innings. T. Fawbush leads FAU with 10 appearances, going 2-6 in 55 IP, with 32 strikeouts. S. Call paces the Owls with a .385 average, eight extra base hits and a .600 slugging percentage. H. Barnes (.333) and Fawbush (.300) are both batting at least .300 and have registered 12 or more RBI.
Western Kentucky (Saturday, March 10 – 11 a.m.)
The Hilltoppers opened Sun Belt play with a sweep of FAU to improve to 15-5 this season. WKU have produced 120 runs, while allowing only 54. The top half of the lineup is hitting .300 or better, with Preslie Cruce leading the way at .370. The big bats belongs to Kelsie Mattox (8HR, 17 RBI) and Amanda Thomas (4HR, 17 RBI). Kim Wagner and Emily Rousseau split most of the time from the mound. Wagner boasts a 1.62 ERA and 59 Ks through 56 innings, while Rousseau has a 2.18 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. The pitchers are 7-1 and 7-2, respectively.
Providence (Saturday, March 10 – 4 p.m.)
The Friars are 2-6, having most recently completed the Towson Series with an 8-0 rout of Fairfield on Sunday, March 4. Jessie Bryant leads PC with a .400 batting average and two homers for a .700 slugging percentage. Providence is batting .269 and have scored 31 runs to its opponents’ 55. The pitching staff is saddled with a 6.12 ERA, have given up 42 earned runs in 48 innings.
Minnesota (Sunday, March 11 – 11 a.m.)
The Gophers are off to their best start since 2002 with a 14-4 record, most recently topping Rutgers, 4-0, on Sunday, March 4. Minnesota has 21 homers to date, led by Kaitlyn Richardson’s six long balls. She also leads the team in slugging (.860), runs batted in (21), hits (21) and walks (13). The Gophers have scored 102 runs, while allowing only 30. Sara Moulton is the ace of the UMD pitching staff, with a dominant 0.80 ERA in 87 innings. Moulton has amassed 124 strikeouts, given up 25 walks and allowed just 10 earned runs in 16 appearances and 10 complete games. The pitching staff as a whole is limiting opponents to a .170 batting average and carries a .154 ERA.
