
Women's Tennis Splits Matches Start the Season

Providence, R.I. - The 45th-ranked Boston College women's tennis team split their matches over the weekend, defeating No. 56 Dartmouth, 6-1, on Saturday and falling to No. 53 Brown, 4-3, on Sunday. Junior Olga Khmylev and freshman Jessica Wacnik won their singles matches on both days and Khmylev, along with partner and classmate Alex Kelleher, took both doubles matches on the weekend.
The Eagles defeated the Big Green in the first dual match of the 2011-12 season. Four of the five singles wins came in straight sets, as freshman Jessica Wacnik, ranked 108th in the nation and fourth in the Northeast region, defeated Akiko Okuda, 6-1, 6-2, on the second court, senior Erina Kikuchi, ranked ninth in the region, did not lose a match, taking down Sabrina Stewart, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot, senior Katarina Gajic won, 6-4, 6-2, and junior Olga Khmylev earned a victory by the same scores. Junior Kelly Barry also tallied a win, defeating Shelley Carpeni, in third-set super breaker (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (5)).
Junior Alex Kelleher and partner, Khmylev, ranked 11th nationally and first in the region, defeated Jeri Reichel and Melissa Matusuoka, 8-3, on the first court in doubles action while Wacnik and Kikuchi, the 32nd doubles team in the nation and second in the region, defeated Okuda and Sarah Leonard on the second court, 8-2.
The Eagles fell to the Brown Bears on Sunday morning in Providence, R.I. BC won two of the three doubles matches to tally one point. Kelleher and Khmylev tallied an 8-4 victory over Casey Herzberg and Jessica Harrow on the first court and Gajic and Barry earned a close, 9-8(3) win over Sarah Kandath and Laura Wiley on the third court.
In singles action, Wacnik stayed undefeated on the young season, defeating Herzberg, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 2 slot. Khmylev also recorded her second win, beating Wiley, 6-1, 6-2, on court five. While Barry won her first set, 6-0, on the sixth court, opponent Julie Flanzer came back to help the Bears win with 6-1 and 6-4 wins. Kelleher retired to after one set to give a point to Brown and Kikuchi and Gajic lost on courts two and three, respectively.
The Eagles return to action on Jan. 28 when they face Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., at 12:30 p.m.
