Men's Tennis Competes in USTA Invitational

The Boston College men’s tennis team got the 2011-12 season off to a good start at the USTA Invitational in Flushing, N.Y. over the weekend. As a whole, the Eagles finished 7-14 in singles action and 3-5 in doubles play.
Freshman Matt Wagner led the way for BC in his college debut, tallying two wins and a loss. He defeated Joe Michalisin, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, and Greg Streat, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of his draw before falling to Victor Martinez in a hard-fought battle, which came down to the final set (6-7(6), 6-4, 10-5).
Wagner paired with senior Jonathan Schroeder in doubles action, going 1-1. Schroeder recorded a 1-2 record over the weekend, defeating Alex Holland, 6-0, 6-4, in his victory.
The BC pair of junior Billy Grokenberger and senior Akash Muppidi tallied two wins, advancing to the semifinals in their flight with wins over Hauk/Kallen (8-4) and Dube/Reznek (8-2), before losing to Katz/Turudic, 8-4.
Senior Rob Anker, sophomore Michael McGinnis and freshman Joe Davison each tallied one win over the weekend.
