NEWTON, Mass. - The Boston College (3-1) field hockey squad earned a 6-1 victory against Quinnipiac (1-1) on Friday afternoon during the squad's 5th Annual Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser.
The Eagles outshot the Bobcats, 25-9, and forced more corners, 10-4. Four BC players found the back of the cage in the outing. Grad student Maike de Jager and senior Courtney Tavener each notched a pair of goals, while seniors Carla Tamer and Catherine O'Brien tallied one apiece. With today's goals, O'Brien and de Jager each logged her first on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry recorded the win in the cage for BC, marking her third of the season and of her career.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead, as Kaitlyn Notarianni netted a hard, back-hand shot from seven yards out just 4:47 into the game.
The Eagles retaliated with just over five minutes left in the first half, scoring off a well-executed corner. Tavener inserted the ball to sophomore Paige Norris, whose clean stick-stop allowed Tamer to send a hard drive past the Quinnipiac goalkeeper to deadlock the score at one a side heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles' offense came to life, breaking open the game with three goals in just over two minutes. O'Brien jolted the BC attack into action, as she grabbed the ball off the goalkeeper's pads and, despite falling down, managed to score unassisted and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Tavener extended BC's lead with back-to-back goals. Tamer inserted a long hit that found Tavener alone in front of the cage to give the senior forward her first goal of the game. A minute later, Tavener was in position again, this time at the post, allowing her to deflect a pass from freshman Abby Bascetta into the cage.
De Jager added two goals of her own to put the game away for BC. With just over 11 minutes to play, the Eagles converted on another direct corner, this time with de Jager scoring on assists from Norris and junior Jacqui Moorfield. De Jager scored again with just over three minutes left in the game, as she found the back of the cage unassisted to put the Eagles on top, 6-1.
Boston College returns to action on Sunday, September 4, when the squad hosts Holy Cross at 3 p.m.
