NEWTON, Mass. - The Boston College (4-1) field hockey squad earned a decisive, 6-0 victory against Holy Cross (0-3) on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles dominated on both sides of the ball, as the team outshot the Crusaders, 30-1, and forced more corners, 12-1. Five Eagles scored in the outing, as senior Carla Tamer found the back of the cage twice, and sophomore Virgynia Muma, grad student Maike de Jager, sophomore Chapin Duke and freshman Emma Plasterasrecorded one goal apiece. Today's goal marked the first of Muma's collegiate career, while Plasteras tallied her second.
The Eagles' attack went to work early and often in today's contest. Muma put BC on top, 1-0, just a minute and a half into the game. The Eagles offense was crashing in on the Holy Cross goalkeeper, getting off two other shots, before Muma took control of the ball off of a rebound to score.
BC's precision on penalty corners continued today, as the team scored two goals in that fashion. The first goal on a penalty corner came with just under 18 minutes left in the first half. Freshman Sarah Hospodar inserted the ball to sophomore Paige Norris, whose clean stick stop allowed Tamer to send a hard drive past the Holy Cross goalkeeper.
Duke scored the Eagles last goal before the half to put her squad up, 3-0, as she got possession of the ball and took a back-hand shot from the top of the circle, recording her sixth goal of the season.
Just over two minutes into the second half, the Eagles struck again, this time in the form of de Jager, who stole the ball off of the Holy Cross goalkeeper's pads during a scrum in front of the cage to set up her own goal.
With just under 21 minutes to play, grad student Anna Wetherall threaded the ball through the Holy Cross defense to find Plasteras at the top of the circle who took advantage of a one-on-one with the goalkeeper by taking a hard shot for the goal.
The Eagles converted on another well-executed corner to earn the 6-0 victory. This time, junior Jacqui Moorfield inserted the ball to sophomore Nicole Schuster, whose stick stop allowed Tamer to record her second goal of the day.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, September 9, when they travel across town to take on rival Boston University at Harvard. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
