STORRS, Conn. - The Boston College field hockey squad earned a 3-1 victory against No. 4 Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. The victory not only marked the team's second win over a ranked opponent so far this season, but also extended BC's road unbeaten streak to 3-0.
Grad student Anna Wetherall, who had a breakout, two-goal game against Maryland on Friday, came through for the Eagles once again, this time tallying the game-winning goal for BC. Senior Carla Tamer and freshman Emma Plasteras added to the Eagles' offense with one goal apiece, as Tamer recorded a team-best seventh on the season and Plasteras registered the third of her career.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry played all 70 minutes and recorded three saves to earn the victory in the cage for the Eagles.
Wetherall gave BC the lead just over three minutes into the game to make it a 1-0 contest. After a good outlet and pass up the line, Wetherall eliminated her opponent, entered the circle and fired a hard shot to the far corner of the goal.
BC continued to pressure the Connecticut defense and forced the Huskies to call a time out just 11 minutes into the game.
BC was moving the ball well around the field with all of the squad's players involved in every attack. This led to an opportunity in the attacking circle where Chapin Duke was awarded a penalty stroke for BC and in the 17th minute, Tamer converted on the free shot for her team to extend Boston College's lead.
Connecticut applied pressure early after the break and the Huskies' lone goal of the game came after halftime, when Cara Silverman scored on an assist from Chloe Hunnable off a penalty corner variation.
With just over 15 minutes left in the game, Plasteras received a hard pass from junior back Kara Mackintire and slipped the ball past the UConn goalkeeper from close range putting BC on top, and solidifying the Eagles victory 3-1.
BC controlled the remainder of the game and held off some late penalty corner chances for the Huskies in the closing minutes.
Head Coach Ainslee Lamb commented on this weekend's results as a huge step for the program.
"To take defending national champion No. 3 Marland 14 minutes into overtime, and then to travel to Connecticut to play the No. 4 team in the country and win the way that we did today was exciting," Lamb said
"With the combination of preparation, confidence in their abilities against these opponents and execution of quality hockey, the girls are being rewarded for their efforts."
