Boston College senior Jillian Mastroianni picked up her fifth shutout of the season to give her the new Eagles program record of 38 in a 4-0 victory over Colgate in front of 507 fans on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Field.
Mastroianni earned the save with two saves, including a tip over the crossbar off a header in the first half. She now has a win-loss record of 53-17-7.
A native of Durham, Conn. Mastroianni also holds the single season record for shutouts with 14, which she accomplished as a sophomore.
Boston College got on the board early as sophomore Patrice Vettori headed in a beautiful ball in the box from Kristen Mewis. It was Vettori's second goal of the season. It was the third assists of the season for Mewis.
A minute later, senior Julia Bouchelle gave BC a 2-0 lead. After a corner kick to the short corner from Vettori, Bouchelle one-timed the ball by the Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh (eight saves). It was Bouchelle's first goal of the season. At the half, Boston College out shot Colgate, 13-3 while both teams had four corner kicks.
The second half Kristie Mewis scored the first of two when she ran onto a beautiful long ball from freshman Casey Morrison. Mewis, with two Colgate defenders on her back, calmly placed a left-footed shot by Walsh for a 3-0 BC lead at 49:50. Mewis put BC up 4-0 when she one-time a perfectly placed pass from Victoria DiMartino to the far post at 68:02.
Game Notes:
• BC's Alaina Beyar and Jillian Mastroianni played the full 90 minutes. The two seniors have played every minute of every game this season.
• The two goals by Kristen Mewis was the first time a BC player has scored multiple goals since Brooke Knowlton had tow vs. West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
• BC head coach Alison Foley picked up another victory to give her 197 career victories, just three away from 200.
• Boston College will host Dartmouth on Wednesday, September 18 at the Newton Soccer Field at 4 p.m.
