Anne Pankowski (Laguna Hills, Calif.) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the U.S. Women's Under-18 Team to a 3-2 win over Canada in the opening game of the 2011 Women's Under-18 Series in Rockland, Ont.
"I think the key tonight was the girls contained their excitement and played hard," said Heather Linstad, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's Under-18 Team. "The team played composed and came out ready to skate. Even though we gave up two goals, I never thought we got back on our heels."
The U.S. struck first, just 1:02 into the opening period, when Pankowski scored from just outside the crease. Team USA made it 2-0 off a Kaliya Johnson (Chandler, Ariz.) slapshot from the point. Pankowski drew the lone assist on the play. Canada cut the lead in half thanks to a power-play goal by Meghan Dufault at 17:58, but the U.S. finished the opening 20 minutes with a 3-1 advantage thanks to Paige Savage (Carrollton, Texas), who tipped in Courtney Burke's (Albany, N.Y.) shot from the point. Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) also drew an assist on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, Canada came within a goal with 8:07 left in regulation on Dufault's second power-play marker of the contest, but the U.S. maintained its advantage to capture the victory in game one of the series.
Sidney Peters (Geneva, Ill.) made 26 saves for the win for Team USA.

Despite a 25-18 shots-on-goal advantage, the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team dropped a 3-2 decision to Canada tonight in the second of three games between the two countries at the 2011 Women's Under-18 Series in Rockland, Ont. Team USA won the opening game of the series on Thursday (Aug. 18) by a 3-2 count.
"I thought we played very well," said Heather Linstad, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team. "It was a terrific hockey game between two very good teams. On the game-winner, they caught us on a little bit of a breakdown and unfortunately, that's going to happen at times."
After a scoreless first period, Canada opened a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the second frame. But a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the period gave Team USA a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) found the back of the net to gain the first U.S. marker at 14:29, with help from Haley Skarupa (Rockville, Md.) and Mary Anne Kennedy-Menefee (Lansing, Mich.), before Anne Pankowski (Laguna Hills, Calif.) put the U.S. in the lead with a power-play goal at 18:22.
Canada, however, rallied to even the game 1:17 into the third stanza, before Nicole Connery potted the game-winner with just 1:15 left in regulation.
U.S. netminder Megan Miller (Long Grove, Ill.) made 15 saves in the game.

Team USA won the opening game of the series on Thursday (Aug. 18) by a 3-2 count, while Canada took the second game of the series on Friday (Aug. 19), 3-2.
"I thought we were the more aggressive team in the first half," said Heather Linstad, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team. "Overall, I think we did some good things to build on and move forward."
Dana Trivigno (Setauket, N.Y.) opened the scoring at 2:53 of the first period and Sydney Daniels (Southwick, Mass.) followed suit with a power-play goal at 7:58 to give Team USA a 2-0 lead. Canada got on the board a minute later, however, with a goal from Laura Stacey.
