NEWTON, Mass. - Junior Kyle Bekker scored both Boston College goals as the No. 25 men's soccer team beat Fairfield, 2-1, Monday afternoon at the Newton Campus Field.
It was the first multi-goal game of Bekker's career, who peppered the net with a game-high eight shots. His first goal came in the 68th minute to break a scoreless tie and his other was on a free kick from 19 yards out in the 87th minute to win the game.
Junior Charlie Rugg assisted on Bekker's first goal while classmate Justin Luthy made three saves in net.
Both sides were unable to create many chances in the first half as BC had five shots to Fairfield's three. The best opportunity may have belonged to BC senior Steve Rose, who took a nice feed from freshman Christian Johnson in the left side of the box. Rose was wide open with no one but the keeper in front of him, but he misfired on the shot and went wide.
The same happened to senior Amit Aburmad 10 minutes into the second half. Rugg raced past the keeper -who came way out of net - down the left side of the field. Without an angle to shoot, he passed to Aburmad in front. There were defenders at the goal line, but Aburmad pulled the shot right.
Five minutes later, Bekker nearly gave the Eagles the lead. On his first free kick attempt of the night from 22 yards, he bent a shot around the wall but hit the left post. In the 68th minute, Rugg and Bekker finally connected for a goal to make it 1-0.
Fairfield notched the equalizer six minutes later after a little confusion in the box. A couple of players from both teams were around a free ball and Jordan Ayris snuck a shot under Luthy to tie the game. Matt Danaher was credited with the assist.
With BC on the attack and time winding down, a Fairfield defender took down an Eagle just outside of the box. After a red card was shown, Bekker stepped to the ball and blasted a shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal at the 86:53 mark.
Luthy came up with a pair of big saves in the second half to keep the Stags from getting on the board even more. He turned away a hard shot by Jon Clements at the midway point of the half and then with 8:42 remaining, Luthy came off his line and met a surging Nuno Rodrigues for another great save.
BC (2-0-0) will host Quinnipiac on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Field.
