Amsterdam - AMSTERDAM - The Boston College women's basketball team suffered its first loss to the Netherlands, 61-53, in the EuroJam Tournament in Amsterdam at the Topsportcentrum Almere on Saturday.
The Eagles were led by junior Kerri Shields with 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting from beyond on the arc. The junior also had four rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Katie Zenevitch had five points, six boards and five steals while freshman Deidra Smith added nine points and four boards.
BC opened up with a 15-9 first quarter as Zenevitch scored the first five points, which included her only three-pointer. The second quarter the Netherlands pressure began to bother the Eagles. The Netherlands started to hit from the outside but also used a strong inside game to take a two point lead at the half, 25-23.
Boston College worked on ironing out some kinks with a new team as the Eagles started four new players - Alyssa Fressle, Tiffany Ruffin, Katie Zenevitch and Korina Chapman.
Turnovers continued to plaque the Eagles in the second half. The Netherlands scored 11 points off the Eagles 22 giveaways.
After three quarters BC was down by only four points. The fourth quarter BC opened with two missed shots and the Netherlands took a six point lead. A Ruffin baseline jumper cut the lead to just three points but a miss and turnover by BC and the Netherlands went down low to Marious Nieuwveen for two and take a six point lead.
The Eagles fought hard and with five minutes to play, Smith hit a half hook inside and was fouled. BC was down three, 51-45. Two turnovers and a foul put Nieuwveen at the line for two freebies and the Netherlands held a 53-47 lead with under three minutes to play.
A Shields three-pointer with 20 seconds left cut the Netherlands lead to three points but BC could not stop the sharp-shooting opponent from the foul line.
