Baseball Loses Finale To No. 1 Virginia, 4-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Will Roberts threw 8.0 shutout innings to lead No. 1 Virginia to a 4-0 win against the Boston College baseball team Sunday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Roberts allowed four hits, walked two and struck out six batters. Only two Eagles were able to reach second base during his outing. Closer Branden Kline pitched a scoreless ninth.
John Hicks did a bulk of the work on offense for Virginia (42-5, 20-4 ACC) as he went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. John Barr was 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored while Steven Proscia had two hits and drove in the other run.
Junior Andrew Lawrence had BC's (16-26, 7-16) lone extra base hit with a triple in the fourth inning. Freshman John Hennessy had another hit in his second-straight start. Junior Matt Brazis worked 2.1 shutout innings and allowed one hit.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. Chris Taylor drew a leadoff walk to start the game and he got to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Hicks drove him home with a sac fly to center.
The Eagles' best chance to score came in the bottom of the fourth and it would have tied the game. Lawrence pulled a one-out triple down the line in right and then senior Mike Sudol hit a short fly to center. Kenny Swab collected the second out as Lawrence was tagging and then fired home. Lawrence slid and the throw was a bit to the right of home plate, but Hicks tagged Lawrence and he was called out on a bang-bang play to keep the tying run off the board.
The Cavaliers then put up two more runs in the top of the fifth. Taylor and Barr hit consecutive singles with one out to put runners on the corners and then Hicks chopped a two-run double down the third base line to make it 3-0.
Proscia added some insurance in the ninth with an RBI single to push the lead to four runs.
BC has added a game to their home schedule and will host Central Connecticut State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Shea Field.
