Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Senior Gemma Ypparila drove in four runs, including two on a walk-off home run to end a 14-inning contest in game one as the Boston College softball team opened up its home slate with a pair of wins, 5-3 and 2-0, over NC State (15-17, 1-7 ACC) on Sunday at Shea Field.
Sophomore Nicole D'Argento went 2-for-3 in the second contest and drove in the winning run for the Eagles (9-19-5-3 ACC).
Senior Allison Gage (4-8) earned both wins for BC. The LaGrange, Ill. native pitched the final 7.2 innings of the first contest, before returning to throw all five in the second. Gage struck out 11 batters, walked five and allowed only four hits on the day.
Freshman Amanda Horowitz started game one for the Eagles, striking out four and walking five before being tagged for a three-run homer in the top of the sixth in an otherwise stellar outing.
Freshman Kayla Cox (7-10) handled all 13.2 innings of game one for NC State. The rookie struck out 15 batters, walked nine, gave up eight hits and allowed two earned runs.
Junior Morgan Peeler (6-6) shouldered the loss in game two. The righty struck out two, walked a pair, gave up four hits and allowed one earned run.
BC took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game one. The Eagles loaded the bases when junior Lizzy Ploen reached on an error and D'Argento and third-year Ali Lynnette Krech walked. With one down, BC plated its first run when freshman Tory Speer reached on an error from the Wolfpack shortstop. With the bases fulle, Ypparila stepped up and punched one down the left field line to bring in D'Argento and Lynette-Krech on a standup up double.
NC State drew even, 3-3, in the top of the seventh. Alyssa Allbritten was hit by a pitch and pinch run for by Scout Albertson. Bridget Desbois drew another walk and was subbed out for by Kirstin Morris to bring the tying run to the plate. With one out, Bethaney Wells hit her fifth home run of the year to right field to tie the game and prompt the pitching change for BC.
The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the 14th inning, when Ypparila ended the four-hour, 18-mintue battle with a heroic two-run blast to left center, her third long ball of the season.
Game two moved much quicker, but neither side scored through four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Maria Pandolfo drew a walk and Ploen went opposite field with a double down the right field line to put runners in scoring position for BC. A single from freshman Ronnie Mae Ayers loaded the bases. D'Argento then singled down the left field line to plate Pandolfo for the go ahead run. A failed pickoff attempt from the Wolfpack's catcher allowed Ploen to score on the next play.
A few minutes later, the umpires halted the game, sealing the win for BC and giving it the second-ever ACC series sweep in school history.
The Eagles will compete next at Connecticut on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m., before resuming conference action at Maryland April 9-10. GameTracker will provide live stats for both meetings.
