Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Three Boston College softball team members batted 3-for-4 and drove in at least three runs, as the Eagles (14-27, 5-10 ACC) run-ruled Providence, 13-5, in six innings on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Shea Field.
Leading the way for BC were senior Gemma Ypparila with four RBI and three runs, sophomore Nicole D’Argento with four RBI and two runs and junior Ali Lynnette-Krech with three RBI and a trio of runs. Each athlete hit a home run to power the Eagles past the Friars (21-28, 5-12 Big East) and bring the team’s single-season long ball total to 50 – the first-time in program history the Eagles have reached the half-century mark.
Senior Allison Gage (6-11) threw five innings, struck out one batter, walked three and allowed three earned runs on six hits to earn the win.
Alicia Grosso (11-16) shouldered the loss for Providence, lasting 5.1 innings, striking out five batters, walking another five and allowing 12 runs on 11 hits.
Providence took one run lead in the first, when Jen Abrams doubled to right center and came around on a pair of singles up the middle from Kristen Stratton and Jessie Bryant, respectively.
A lead-off homer from Ava Pandiani put the Friars up by two after the top half of the second.
In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles evened the score, 2-2. A single from Ypparila and double from Lynette-Krech put runners in scoring position, before junior Lizzy Ploen reached when the pitcher dropped a bunt. With each bag occupied, senior Alison Kooistra fended off 12 pitches to draw a walk and send in the first run for BC. On the next pitch, sophomore Maria Pandolfo was hit by Grosso to force in the runner on third and tie the game.
In the third, Stratton hit a second lead-off home run for Providence to reclaim the lead, but Boston College answered with five runs to take control of the game, 7-3.
After freshman Tory Speer singled up the middle, Ypparila skyrocketed a shot that hugged the left field line and put BC on top, 4-3, with her fifth long ball of the season. Lynette-Krech followed with a single and Pandolfo drew a walk two batters later for D’Argento to bring them in with a homer to left.
In the top of the sixth, the Friars scored two runs when Huber tripled down the right field line, plating Abrams who had singled, and took home when the throw to the plate sailed into the backstop to pressure BC, 7-5.
Six runs from the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning ended the game, 13-5. BC found runners on first and second with a singles from D’Argento and freshman Alana DiMaso, before a walk from Speer loaded the bases. Ypparila then singled up the middle to plate the lead runners and Lynette-Krech crushed a third shot to left to extend the Maroon and Gold lead, 12-3.
D’Argento’s walk-off hit scorched to left, bringing in Ploen who was hit by a pitch and moved around the bases when Kooistra reached on a poor throw to first and Pandolfo was beamed.
The Eagles will conclude their ACC schedule with three contests against No. 20/20 Georgia Tech April 30 and May 1. Saturday’s doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through GameTracker.
