Zurich, Switzerland - U.S. Women's National Ice Hockey Team members and Boston College seniors Molly Schaus and Kelli Stack won their third consecutive gold medals with an overtime victory, 3-2, against Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Championship at Hallenstadion on Monday, April 25.
The Americans won Group A with dominant performances versus Slovakia, Russia and Sweden. The U.S. netted 27 goals and surrendered only two in the group stage, before a defeating Russia, 5-1, in a rematch during the semifinal.
Throughout the tournament, Stack tallied four points on two goals and a pair of assists and had a plus-five rating on the ice.
In the first meeting with Russia, the Brooklyn Heights, Ohio product notched her first goal on a wrap around play to put the U.S. up, 10-1, before connecting with Kacey Bellamy later in the third to tally goal No. 12 in the win, 13-1.
In the final group stage game, Stack ignited a 9-1 defeat of Sweden with a power play goal just past the fifth minute and dished an assist to Monique Lamoureux-Kolls to put the U.S. up, 3-0, nearly six minutes later.
Stack concluded the tournament with the third-best face-off percentage (.696), winning 35 in five games and was named the best player per game in the title matchup with the neighbors to the north.
Schaus dressed for four games, getting the start for the initial matchup against Russia. In 60 minutes of action, the Natick, Mass. native stopped 19 shots and allowed just one goal, which came in the final second of period two.
