Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Boston College softball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader against North Carolina, 4-0 and 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
Junior Brittany Wilkins homered for the Eagles (11-27, 5-10 ACC) in the second game, bringing her 2011 total to 13 and the team sum to 43. Both marks are one shy of tying the single-season records for Boston College.
Freshman Amanda Horowitz and senior Allison Gage split the losses on the day. Horowitz (3-8) pitched all six innings of game one, striking out three, walking on and allowing one earned run on seven hits. Gage (4-11) also threw six innings, struck out one batter, walked another and allowed four earned runs on nine hits in game two.
Lori Spingola (24-14) picked up both wins for the Tar Heels (30-19, 11-6 ACC), tossing 12 innings, striking out 12 batters, walking one and allowing seven hits over the two game span. Sara Bucholz picked up a save in the second meeting, tossing two innings, striking out a batter and allowing two runs on three hits.
North Carolina took a three run in the first inning of game one. Amy Nece reached on a throwing error to first, taking second on the play. Haleigh Dickey singled up the middle to plate Nece and was substituted out for Chelsey Butler. Another Eagle error allowed the Tar Heels to keep runners on first and second, before Ally Blake doubled to right center to tally two more runs.
In the fifth, Nece added the final run for UNC when she singled to left, moved up on a single to left, stole third and came in on a shot up the middle.
In game two, Nece bunted to get on base and advanced around the bases on back-to-back singles to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the fourth, Brittany McKinney singled up the middle to bring in a runner from second, who had reached on a walk and was moved up on a sac bunt.
Wilkins' long ball put the Eagles on the board, 2-1, in the sixth, but four Tar Heel runs in the bottom of the frame extended the lead, 6-1.
Paige Williams pinch ran for Dickey, who had doubled to right center, and stole third. Blake then singled through the right side, plating Williams, before moving to third on a throwing error to first on the next at-bat. The throw got away when BC tried to pick off McKinney at first, allowing one run to come in and McKinney to take second. A single to left and a double center brought in the final runs for North Carolina.
With one out and a runner on first in the seventh, freshman Ronnie Mae Ayers reached first and took second when the short stop over threw first base trying to convert a double play. A double to right center from sophomore Nicole D'Argento delivered the RBI and concluded the scoring, 6-2.
The Eagles will host mid-week games versus Dartmouth and Providence on April 27-28, before wrapping up their ACC schedule against Georgia Tech April 30 and May 1.
