Charleston, S.C. - The 39th ranked Boston College women's tennis team fell in a tightly contested match to No. 12 Clemson, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
ITA ranked No.113 junior Katarina Gajic defeated No. 100 Klara Vyskocilov, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), on court three and senior Katharine Attwell beat Laurianne Henry, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2), in the sixth slot to give the Eagles (7-9, 2-4 ACC) points in singles play.
BC captured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Sophomores Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev topped Maria Belaya and Caroline Magnusson, 8-3, and Attwell paired with Gajic to defeat Vyskocilov and Henry, 8-6, to give the Eagles the early advantage.
On No. 1 doubles, freshman Veronica Corning and junior Erina Kikuchi fell to the nation's top-ranked pairing of Josipa Bek and Keri Wong, 8-2.
Tough BC losses in four straight singles matches gave the win to Clemson (16-5, 4-2 ACC).
Wong, the ITA 51st ranked player, evened the match with a win, 6-0, 6-2, on singles No. 2 over Kikuchi.
Belaya then put the Tigers up, 2-1, by defeating Khmylev, 6-2, 6-1, on singles court five.
The pivotal point of the match came on court four. Corning rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first set to force a third with a 6-2 win in the second. Tied at four, Magnusson broke serve to take the lead and hold on for the win, 6-4.
Moments later, 10th ranked Bek halted Kelleher on No. 1 singles to clinch the match. The Worcester, Mass. native took Bek to a tiebreaker in the first, but was topped, 7-6(7). The sophomore then battled back from a three point deficit to threaten in the second, but fell again, 6-4.
Attwell and Gajic delivered their wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles, respectively, shortly after.
BC travels to Atlanta to continue conference play against Georgia Tech tomorrow at noon.
