Boston College senior center Carolyn Swords was selected by the Chicago Sky in the second round - 15th overall pick - of the 2011 Women's National Basketball Association Draft this afternoon.
Swords' is the fifth Boston College women's basketball player to be selected in the WNBA draft. She is the first to go in the Top 20 of the WNBA Draft.
The last BC player to be selected was Kathrin Ress by Minnesota in the fourth round of the 2007 WNBA Draft. In the 2006 WNBA Draft, Brooke Queenan was chosen in the second round (23rd pick overall) by the New York Liberty. In 2004, the Lynx chose Jacobs in the third-round selection (33rd overall pick). Cal Bouchard ('00) was the college's first draftee, selected in the fourth round (60th overall pick) by the Detroit Shock in 2000.
Swords led Boston College in scoring (17.3 ppg.), rebounding (9.5 rpg.), blocks (1.7 blocks) and field goal percentage (71.4%). She is the first BC player to lead the country in a statistical category as she was the national champion in field goal percentage the last three seasons. She finished her career with the fourth all-time best FG% at 67.7 percent.
A native of Sudbury, Mass., Swords recorded a single-season career-high 16 double-doubles and set a new program record with 46 in her four years. Swords' became the second player in program history to reach 2,000 points as the center. She was the first play in program history to reach 1,000 rebounds and ended her four years with 1,159 boards. Swords' is also the all-time leader in blocks at BC.
