WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and cut off the tying run at the plate in the top of the eighth to beat the Boston College baseball team, 3-2, Wednesday night at Fitton Field.
Jack Laurendeau and Nick Ciardello did the damage at the plate for the Crusaders (8-8-1) by hitting three RBI base hits with two outs. Laurendeau went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs while Ciardello was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Brendan McCrea got the win on the mound and John Colella picked up his third save.
Junior Andrew Lawrence provided the only offense for BC (8-10) when he hit a two-run homer in the third inning. It was his second long ball of the year. Senior Mike Sudol had a double. Junior Matt Brazis got the loss on the hill.
Lawrence's homer on a 2-2 count put the Eagles ahead early in the third. Junior Brad Zapenas hit a one-out single to get himself on base before Lawrence.
Holy Cross tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Doerhoff led off with a double off the wall down the right field line but only advanced to third with two outs in the inning. Laurendeau went with a two-strike pitch the opposite way for an RBI single then Ciardello hit the base of the wall in right to bring Laurendeau around to score to make it a 2-2 game.
The Crusaders took a one-run lead when they scored in the seventh with the help of the same two players. Laurendeau forced a walk with two outs and stole second to get himself into scoring position. With Ciardello at the dish, Laurendeau took off for third. Ciardello found the hole left by Anthony Melchionda when he went to cover the bag for an RBI single.
The Eagles came close to tying the game in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Matt Watson was hit by a pitch with one out and then Sudol hit the wall in right with two outs. Watson was waved around third but the Crusaders gunned him down at home, 9-4-2, to keep the run off the board.
The Eagles host Virginia Tech this weekend in a three-game ACC series. The games will be played at Bill Beck Field at the University of Rhode Island due to poor field conditions in Chestnut Hill.
