The seventh-ranked Boston College Eagles will face off against the third-ranked Boston University Terriers in the first round of the 33rd Annual Women's Beanpot on Tuesday, February 8 at 8:00 p.m. BC is hosting this year's Beanpot tournament. BC leads the all-time series, 18-10-3.
LAST TIME vs. BOSTON UNIVERSITY (January 15, 2011)
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's hockey team dropped a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Boston University on Saturday, January 15 at Kelley Rink.
It was an even matchup between the Eagles and the Terriers in the scoreless first period. Both teams had several opportunities, with BU slightly outshooting BC 12-11, but nothing was converted until 5:54 in the second period when BU's Jillian Kirchner tallied a score to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead heading into the final frame.
With ten minutes remaining in the game, BC goaltender Molly Schaus stopped a one-on-one shot but it was not enough as the Terriers eventually pulled away, scoring three goals in the last half of the third period, including one empty net goal.
BC IN THE 2010 BEANPOT RECAP
The Eagles lost the first round game to Harvard 5-0 in the 2010 Beanpot. The two teams battled evenly with one another through the first two periods until the 18:26 mark of the middle frame when Harvard's Liza Ryabkina snuck a power-play goal by Boyles to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Harvard would add to their total in the third, notching another four tallies to finish the game 5-0. Freshman goalie Corinne Boyles made a career high 46 saves on the night.
Boston College and Boston University skated to a 1-1 tie in the consolation game. The Eagles struck first as Allie Thunstrom netted the puck at 2:01 of the opening frame. BC goalie Kiera Kingston turned away 24 shots before BU's Kasey Boucher slipped the puck past her with seven minutes remaining in the game. Kingston stopped two shots in the overtime period to hold onto a tie. The Terriers' Alissa Fromkin recorded 16 saves in goal for BU.
WELCH WOWS WITH FOUR GOAL WEEKEND
A four-goal weekend, including a game-winner and a hat trick, earned Danielle Welch Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Monday, February 7. This is Welch's second league award, and her first this season.
The Hastings, Minn. native tallied her first score of the weekend on Friday, February 4 against Connecticut. BC battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force an overtime period. One and a half minutes into the extra period, Welch tipped in the game-winning goal to give the Eagles a 3-2 win over the Huskies. It was her second game-winning goal this season.
Welch was on fire again at Providence on Sunday, February 6, scoring three of BC's goals and recording an assist on the fourth in the Eagles' 4-2 win. She struck early against the Friars, tallying two goals before the end of the opening frame to give BC an early 2-0 lead. The Friars answered with a second period power-play goal and an even-strength tally in the third, but Welch notched her third goal at 8:14 in the final frame to gain back the lead. She also assisted on Melissa Bizzari's goal to end the game.
The junior forward has 20 points this season - eight goals and 12 assists.
